does any of you know how long the lifespan of an ssd is? Some VSTs use the SSD extremely. I could imagine that this would make the ssds unusable more quickly.

You don't have to worry about this at all. SSD's work on terabyte written, VST is mostly read. Plus something like a 870 EVO is warrantied for 2,400 terrabytes written. If you install Garritan CFX full every single day you'll be good for about 49 years.

What I would recommend however is you make sure you get enough headroom in capacity; SSDs don't like having low free disk space, so go bigger than you think you'll need.

Hello Klaus.

VSTs are read-intensive software and they load samples into RAM after reading off the SDD. So no significant writing involved which can decrease SDD lifespan. Hence don't worry.

I can't afford an acoustic piano therefore I have a digital piano; And I appreciate it. I have to.

Reliability of SSDs has to do with how much data you can write and rewrite, and the overall MBTF, or mean time between failures (how long it can operate before failing).

Because a sample-based VST writes to the SSD at install time, but primarily reads from it during operation, it would seem that MBTF is your main concern. SSD drives from Intel or Samsung, for example, appear to have MBTF's that exceed a million hours.

Some also discuss AFR, or annual failure rate, i.e. the odds of a failure in a given year if the SSD is used 8 hours/day. These seem to be around 0.3%, ie 0.3% chance of failure in a given year if you use it 8 hours/day. I assume this is not uniform from year to year, with a drive having a lower AFR when it is newer and higher AFR when it is older.

Here is some more detailed information:

As others have said, for VST use, you don't have to worry. Are you facing some issues in your playing that you suspect might be to do with SST read-speeds?

SSDs are amazing for long life... there are more important things to worry about. But same rules apply for spinning disks, back up your data. If your SSD is also your main drive where your operating system sits, I clone it to another old spinning disk drive. This way, if the SSD fails, I can snap in the old one and be running... then clone back to the new SSD, swap and all is good. No need even to restore data, a almost no down-time.

If you are still worried, turn off any feature you have that automatically defrags your drive... this is useless with an SSD and is wasted read/writes. Norton 360 does this and it is not good... you can turn it off in the menus somewhere.

thank you for the information. that helped me alot.

i spent a lot of money on vsts. and especially the large vsl vsts need a lot of space on the ssd. I don't have any problems with that at the moment, but when I play on the Bösendorfer Imperial the diskio is around 4 MB / sec. that made me think.
