Just sharing. For anyone who has thing walls and heard music through them, or through a window - and in these times.

Touching indeed but I'm not sure that "Emil" really exists. His playing of every piece is awfully similar to Giorgio's...

Spoilsport. wink
(The thought did occur to me, especially since the ending had so much perfect pathos to it.)

The thing is that I live in a ridiculously thin-walled, thin-ceilinged, thin-floored building so there are actually musical interactions of sorts. With wry humour I note that when I used to practise violin, I'd hear footsteps rapidly recede from upstairs, but another instrument they might actually get closer. Somebody practises piano next door and it's quite nice. And walking past the fire station, I sometimes hear one of the firemen on a trumpet. A violin student in the neighbourhood once got a fantastic teacher after a denigrating one, and the clue to this was when the music started soar through an open window in a way not heard before.

Do any of us sort of mentally reach out when we hear someone else play music from some hidden place, or maybe pause and listen, because we ourselves play and/or learn?

It brings tears to my eyes... Thank you Keystring.

It's like 1 in a million chance for 2 people who can play piano at a high level to live as neighbors. I know a few people who took music lessons before but only 1 still plays regularly. The rest lost interest in music or take the easy way which is listen to other people's recordings.

If I have a neighbor who plays piano regularly, I'd be more inclined to take out my violin and we can do Camille-Saint-Saƫns "The Swan" or "Air on G" from Bach Orchestral Suite #3 as a duet. Music is so powerful it brings a lot of emotions. Coming from a non-musical family, some in the family have a collection of CDs. You don't get the same connection to the music when someone puts in a disc and press Play than when they go to a piano and make music.

Thanks for sharing...

Furthermore, I am quite surprised that Emil could play every piece that Giorgio suggested, without even having practised! I think this story might be Giorgio's fantasy - he plays the piano regularly, and hopes a neighbour enjoys his music, and maybe, just maybe one day he got a request, and then he elaborated on this...
Still, it is a beautiful story.
