I saw this listing randomly and thought it was weird. It's an upright using the "K. Kawai" name.

Never seen that before. And on Kawai's FAQs themselves they state:

Quote
The “K. KAWAI” brand logo is used only for Kawai grand pianos. The logo “KAWAI” (without the initial “K.”) appears on the fallboard of all Kawai upright and digital pianos. Why? When the company first began, Koichi Kawai announced to his staff, “I want to put K. KAWAI on grand pianos and KAWAI on the uprights.” That was his preference from the beginning. His wishes have been honored for over 90 years.

Honored for more than 90 years? What's this listing then, an exception or a counterfeit?

I have an older Kawai K48A, 48" upright, with K Kawai on the fallboard. In fact, the piano has what looks like the same fallboard as a grand piano, and would likely fit a Kawai grand.

I read that the older, top-of-the-line Kawai upright models did have the K Kawai brand logo on the fallboard.

Here is a pic...

Very cool Rick! That's what I was wondering. Funny that Kawai's own website is incorrect. =)

That decal in the listing looks suspicious to my eye.

No correction, Dr. ShiroKuro. Just sharing my own experiences. smile

For the record, I've read often that Kawai only uses the "K. Kawai" on the grands and not the uprights. But, as I said, I also read that the older, high-end Kawai uprights did receive the "K. Kawai" logo on the fallboard. The K48A I have is from 1969, and was a top-of-the-line model at the time. I purchased it from the estate of a professional pianist and piano teacher.

It also has the real, one-piece ivory keytops, but I was not going to mention that. Some people will hate you if you own a piano with real ivory keytops, even if it was legal to use at the time the piano was built.

And, terminaldegree, I agree, something does look odd with that K. Kawai logo on that upright piano fallboard in the original link on eBay. It looks as though the brass lettering was added and has a "raised" effect, and not as neat and clean as it should be.

However, it could be legit... I'm not sure, and I'm no pro...

All the best!

Rick

There are exceptions to every rule . . .
There have been a few high end Kawai pianos with the 'K.KAWAI' fallboard log, but very few.
There have also been a very few grand pianos with just 'KAWAI' on the fallboard. Mainly new model prototypes, though.
