Can anyone tell me about Isaac Hammers.

My rebuilt Steinway was rebuilt with Isaac Hammers and Renner Action, which could be why I suddenly liked the feel of a Steinway Piano. Normally all the Steinway's I have played always felt like they were fighting me or I had to 'work' at getting any substantial sound.

Is there a specific Piano Maker that uses Isaac Hammers in their pianos?

Just gathering info - thanks

You should try the tech forum for people that have more experience with these hammers.

To my knowledge, nobody uses Isaac hammers in new production pianos. I have relatively little experience playing pianos with them, so don’t read into that the wrong way.

I would not characterize any of the new Steinway grands I’ve played in the past 4-5 years as “fighting me” to play.

We have used Isaac Hammers and they can be wonderful. We stopped choosing them a while ago for reasons I wont get into here, but on rare occasion we have a client request them, and then we are happy to use them again.
When they are set up right ( which may take more experience than other hammers, they can come in rough ) they can be very very nice. They are cool pressed. A very good choice of hammer for a vintage Steinway A2.

hey brdwyguy,

We have also used Isaac hammers in the past. They can be a very choice for a Steinway.

In general, the actual maker of a single component (like hammers, strings, damper felts, etc.) are less important than who does the work, and the experience with that particular component the technician has.

My 2 cents,

They were installed by Ithica Piano Builders in 1996!

I second Keith's comments. When they are good, they are REALLY GOOD. But when they are not so good (and it happens) they can be quite bad. The inconsistency was why I stopped using them. The hassle of "fixing the mistakes" became too much to deal with. I know of others who use them regularly at this time and and swear by them.

Edit: I have had them really "talk".
