In case someone at Kawai is reading...

Currently playing live with Nord piano, acoustic Steingraeber piano at home, I'm in hope for a MP12 to show up (quite soon smile ) with:
- something GFC action: I mean GF wooden action, non-sticky reliable, and a bit smaller / compact for more 'portability' (<30kg)
- same form factor as MP11se, with grand-like sober design, vertical panel à-la MP11se (where the Kawai logo is), no wheels
- advanced SK-EX Rendering piano sound engine (like on CA99 / NV5) with multi-channel and corresponding multi-outputs, in order to reproduce the sound modelling with speakers on a venue, (plus the standard "non-rendering" option for standard stereo-output on stage)

Or, still better for me, as an advanced pianist, a "disassemblable" hybrid, like a NV5 you could transport separatly the action, the board and the speaker system /case, and reasssemble on a venue. I still use sometimes an old Yamaha CP73 for that matter, in order to get a real acoustic touch on stage !

Why on earth does nobody offer any transportable hybrid??

Please, Kawai, make a NV5 Hybrid in two or tree parts... If you can't -- or don't want to, for some (sad) reason --, please make a great MP12 for live-pianists !

I wonder what the size of the potential market is for that, compared to a standard, portable stage piano?

I wonder how much that would weigh, and how durable it would be to stand up to regular transport/shipping?

the MP7Se and MP11SE replacements are most likely delayed because of the pandemic. I'm more interested in what Kawai has to offer in the MP7SE replacement myself. Roland RD2000 too has been on the market for a few years now too.

The Cybrid is around 20kg bare keyboard action. (I haven’t measured it though, might as well be 30kg 🤣). Add at least 10kg to it for a case/body. Well, I think it may be MP11 territory as weight. But yeah, doubtful if there’s market for it.

I wonder how much the MP12 with GFIII action will weigh when it finally surfaces.

No reason for mp12 to be heavier than mp11... GF is very similar to GFIII (the only differences afaik are related to different felts and the addition of lightweight plastic pieces at the back of each key).

I know you are referring to different wheels. . .

Oh, I like it when topics related to the MP11SE successor pop up from time to time. But I don't like it when someone suggests installing compromise action in the top model, and not the top one at the moment (except for hybrids, of course).

I wouldn't flirt with weight either. The ES920 has shown what happens as a result of the desire to reduce weight (or just save on materials). Nothing good for me personally. I hope that at least the top slab¹ instrument will remain solidly assembled and strong, which also affects the solidity of the appearance.

¹ I specifically avoided the word "stage", since many people use it not on stage but at home or in studio, rarely moving it somewhere elsewhere.

The potential market is small, it's a niche for sure. Back in the 80's some pianists used to move CP70 as piano replacement. I have one, it is like 130kg, in two parts ~ 60+70kg. It fits in a rather regular car, and 2 people can move it. This isn't possible with an acoustic. With hybrids, it is. Makers just have to design some parts to be removable. It'd stay quite heavy, but trasportable. Hybrid piano is a niche already, anyway.

I'm with you, I want the best piano-like action on stage (say: small venue), and solid materials. For a slab, as low as reasonably achievable weightwise (~30kg max is ok for me), do you think GFIII is a way better action than GFC?

Many previously wrote that they preferred GFIII or GFII to GFC. I, not being able to compare them personally, can only theorize. For example, GFIII has a longer overall key length, which improves the playing experience in the depth of the keys, near the "fallboard", which is important to me.

Hi everyone,

Recently, I sent an enquiry to the Kawai customer support, asking for info about the MP11SE... and also ask if there is any successor of the MP11SE on the way... They have been kind to reply to me pretty soon but in relation to the successor they said that have no information about frown

At the moment, I am planning to buy the MP11SE in two months but I would be disappointed if they will annunce a successor in the next months, for istance for the and of the year.. I could wait a bit more.. even knowing that the MP11SE have been in the market for 4 years so far + 3 years of the MP11 which was pretty similar...

Pearphs @Kawai James could enlighten me and everyone about it smile Thanks

I'm afraid I have nothing more to add beyond what my colleagues have already told you.

Kind regards,

Well, back in October 2020, Kawai James did say:

I do not believe the current MP models will be replaced "very soon".

Perhaps this is still the case, or perhaps the "lack of information" is indicative of something else...

@Ctopher7 I just hope to hear something about soon, some hopes.. So far, the only thing that stop me to buy the MP11SE is the well known "slip tape" issue.. Other than that, few weeks ago, I had a chance to try in showroom an MP11 (that has the same GF action of the MP11SE) and I had a great feeling, even better than when I tried the CA79 (that has the GF III action) ...but peraphs there is no point to buy a product which you already know that you have to fix in a couple of the years (from my personal piont of view)... although that, my tentation to buy it is very big smile

My thoughts exactly. I need to change my piano and a MP12 with a "fixed" keyboard is all I want. I just hope they won't go overboard with the price.
