I've just aquired an 1880's Ibach grand. There is considerable bounce of both hammer and key. Not enough to repeat the note but quite a disturbance. At some point it's had new felts but my guess is they are too heavy? The tech's coming on Monday. What do you folks think? Thanks for your help.

I am not certain what you mean by "bounce." The backchecks should take care of the bounce that is troublesome.

The key bounces at the same time.

There is nothing unusual, but the back rail key cloth may be worn, and the hammer blow may be too great.

I see. The hammers need a softer landing. It's a crazy feeling. All the keys are bobbing away beneath your fingers.

Looks to me like the back checks are not catching the hammer like it should.

Let us know what the tech says.

Good luck!

If you play staccato, the backchecks may never come into play.

I own 5 other pianos. None of them do this.
