I'm trying to understand the difference in 1098 plate markings. I have a 1098 and have seen a recent classified ad for another 1098. Per Steinway ser. no. lookup both were mfd. in 1998: 542xxx and 544xxx. Cabinets are the same size and styled the same. One is finished in black, one in Crown Jewel Collection mahogany. The black one with serial no. 544xxx has a "45" on the plate; the mahogany 542xxx has a "P" on the plate.

My interest: I own the mahogany 542xxx and feel like I should understand the difference, particularly if/when I decide to sell and am asked about it.

Thank you! (Let me know if this should be posted on the tech forum instead of here.)
