Congrats, Peter, on the airing of the segment featuring you on WMUR TV's "New Hampshire Chronicle".

For those who don't know, "NH Chronicle" is an evening tv program that features stories of local interest.

The "Piano Doctor" feature was supposed to have been aired last week, but was pre-empted at last minute by a news special. This was so disappointing. Both my husband and I had been looking forward to watching it.

I believe this feature was actually a "re-run". My recollection is we had already viewed it about a year or so ago, but, even so, we had been looking forward to seeing it again.

The Good News is NH Chronicle decided to bump this feature up a few days and they aired it again last evening, so we did get to see it again.

Thank you, Peter, and thanks, also, to all fellow Piano Technicians out there keeping acoustic pianos alive.

I think you Guys and Gals have a noble calling on this earth.

:-)

Congrats, Peter!
I’m sorry we can’t all see the feature —- but it’s great to have you hanging around here
Thanks so much for always being willing to help!

Thanks Emery for posting!

Peter, just need to know, if you don’t mind: what have been your most and least favorite pianos to restore?

Wow! I didn't realize that this was going to make it to this level. Of course the link has been on the bottom of my signature for quite a while. We thought they did a great job on it (WMUR). Of course we had no input on the final product. And last night's edition was edited by about a minute or two.

Interestingly a collateral result has been a big increase in calls from folks wanting to get rid of old pianos (especially players). They think we can actually do something with them. I could easily fill a barn or two with all the pianos offered. This all came (I think) from the statement about me rescuing the Chickering from going to the dump. In actuality this was probably the one and only time I did it in 45+ years!

As to the favorite or least favorite pianos to restore...that's a tough question to answer. What I will say is that the pink upright (shown in the video) was probably in about the worst condition prior to restoration, and I had my doubts about any success. I actually suggested to the owner that it should go to the dump. However, due to the emotional connection she had to the piano, there was NO WAY she would do that. She told me she did not care what the cost was, she wanted it fixed! Of course I said "okay". The soundboard literally fell apart in my hands after coming into the shop and drying out. In fact, in the end it came out surprisingly well, and is the same upright you see with all new hammers, etc and a humidity control system in it.

Actually, the instruments in which owners have a strong attachment to, I think are the most enjoyable to restore since I am having a part in preserving fond memories. It is not uncommon to see tears of joy (even with me) upon completion and a little concert in the home after delivery. I understand this and often wonder what it would be like to have the Bechstein B that I grew up with back under my fingertips. I learned to play, compose, and tune on that piano.

I'd have to think hard about it to come up with an instrument that I really did not enjoy rebuilding, however on occasion things don't turn out as well as expected (or hoped). Then it's a little disappointing, but usually the disappointment is only in my mind compared to what I hoped.

Right now I'm coming to completion on a Steinway B that was purchased by the owner's grandfather for his daughter as a gift. This is turning out to meet or exceed expectations. 3 years ago we did his model A which was purchased by the same grandfather for his wife in 1897. He has fond memories of his grandfather.

Glad y'all enjoyed the program. 😁

Congratulations, Peter!

It is nice to know well-known celebrities! I may need to borrow some of your "name-recognition" influence one of these days. smile
