Can anyone recommend a good methodical sight-reading app for the advanced student? My son will be playing chamber music in college and wants to look better in front of the string players...

Hi, you can consider marvelpiano.

If you meant phone app, imo mostly are too basic.

Subcribe my youtube channel for incoming LIVE piano with Vocal.

Why not ask in the Adult Beginners Forum? There’s tons of info to help piano students of any age.

It’s already been asked and answered in the teacher’s forum: there is not a sight-reading app that is geared to a conservatory student who will be playing ensembles. In addition, there were other suggestions that met this specific need.

What do you mean by "look better in front of the string players"?

Also, I'm not sure what you mean by "methodical" ... I was going to recommend forScore, but it occurs to me that you might mean you want a teaching app that helps you become a better reader, rather than an app that organizes and displays the scores?

What needs are different when playing with an ensemble? Other than the fact that if you show multiple parts on one score, it is many pages longer than a score that only has one part. This just means the musician needs a foot pedal for page turns.

I play with a violinist and pre-covid we were making plans to do some piano-violin-cello music. I was planning on using my iPad, forScore app and Butterfly flip pedal.

Am I missing something?

Rather than starting a new discussion here, would you mind joining the ongoing discussion in the teacher’s forum?

To me "sight reading" has always meant playing an unknown
piece of sheet music (or a score) for the first time.Yes in a chamber group it is often necessary because it is so practical. Good sight reading takes practice. At least that's what I would have thought.

Perhaps he should ask a student friend of his to turn the pages.

My piano's voice is my voice to God and the great unknown universe, and to those I love.
In other words a hymn. That is all, but that is enough. tre corda
