Here is the finished product delivered home. We will stage an inauguration concert in the fall and I will try and record it.

It’s gorgeous! How does it sound? Please consider posting in the Piano forum! I’m sure many folks there would be very interested!

Are you tuning it yourself?

Yes, I will tune it myself as harpsichords need tuning about once a month. I use the Cleartune App on the iPad. However the instrument is now in its "running in" period and needs to settle down in its new home. Builders of new harpsichords are very concerned about the very thin soundboards developing cracks in dry conditions (under 30 % RH). To avoid this they usually maintain a rather dry climate in their workshops when sizing, assembling and glueing. When reaching a normal level of humidity (40 to 55 % in my home, using a professional humidifier), wood will adjust. The action which is relatively "tight" for precision and lightness (not the jacks, but the keys) will need over the first few months regular easing of some pin holes. For this reason a specialist tech now comes regularly and also does the tuning.

This is fascinating. Thanks for sharing! I feel like tuning a keyboard instrument probably adds another level of connection to the instrument and musical experience. I very much admire people who take the time and effort to learn this skill. May I ask what temperament/tuning system you are going to use? I recently started reading up on historical tuning, and I find the topic intriguing.

The interest in tuning yourself is to be able to change the tuning based on the type of music and period. For example very frequently the french music of the 18th century would be played with the Rousseau ordinary temperament, which is close to Kirnberger III. As to 16th and 17th century, it would be likely a variety around the quarter coma meantone. For Bach, there is a number of possible choices in circulating temperaments.

Beautiful! Congratulations! I look forward very much hopefully to a recording of the inaugural concert.

PS It would be great to see this in the Piano Forum too!
