Hi! I’m just starting working on Standchen and
It seems like there are a lot of abridged or simplified
Versions. Is that right? Can you please direct me to or
Tell me which version is NOT simplified ?
For example a version I found has 3 note chords under the melody in bar 5 while simpler versions have only 2 note chords (the sheet music shows the right hand playing the top voice of the chords while also playing the melody)
Would appreciate your advice!

Thanks

You can find it at IMSLP: https://imslp.org/wiki/Schwanengesang,_D.957_(Schubert,_Franz)
Scroll down to Arrangements and transcriptions (Schwanengesang is a song) to "For piano (Horn)". To the best of my knowledge, that is the one.

Playing the piano is learning to create, playfully and deeply seriously, our own music in the world.

Stanchen is a lieder for voice and piano. So if you are referring to a piano solo version, it is necessarily an arrangement. There is no original version.

You can find the full version on Imslp as well as one arrangement for piano by August Horn.

The Horn arrangement is fine and satisfying to play, not technically difficult, but it's all in the touch with this gorgeous piece. Liszt's arrangement is ahem, somewhat more challenging!

Thank you for all the replies! Yes now I see that
The version I had come across is in fact the Liszt
Version. Is this the version learned by professionals?
I’d prefer to learn THE quintessential version.
Also then, my question is for the Liszt version
What is the recommended technique for playing the top
Voice of the chords while the melody is happening ?
Do people play the entire chords with the left hand
And reserve the right for only the melody ? Or is the right hand
Simultaneously playing the top voice of the chords
As the melody is happening ?

If you use the Liszt version, what is important is whether you can play it, as it is a difficult piece. Typically at that level, you would know how to play it.

The score gives you a fairly clear split between left hand and right hand, so the right hand plays what is indicated in the upper stave. Nothing different from any other piece.

This is the Liszt Version

It's difficult. I like the version arranged by Winkelmann

Casio PX-S3000
Nope, no issues with it at all.
Took lessons from 1960 to 1969, stopped at age 16.
Started again in July 2020 at age 67. Lots more fun now!
