This interview provides some fascinating insight into bleeding-edge synth technology for live concerts c. 1980. Jack Secret was the synth and keyboard tech for the Canadian band Rush.

At the peak, Rush had 21 synths running live (actually 42 as everything was redundant and hot-swappable via a switch). I think most of this was pre-MIDI. Some gear was custom made and some was jury-rigged together.

In the summer of 1980 I worked at a large amphitheater, and was present when Rush did their sound check. They mostly played The Spirit of Radio, which hadn't been released yet. I clearly remember the interesting synth sounds. I'm sure I must have seen Jack Secret that day.
