This piano had two extra set of strings at the top. C#8 D8. I’ve never seen that before. Sohmer 1904. No action parts for those notes and no evidence action parts were ever there for those notes. Is this a mistake or did it have a purpose? Action was not shifted.

If they were not for transposition, then they might have been there:

To provide loading at the top of the bridge.

Because some manic piano designer got carried away!

Most interesting! Perhaps only Hugo Sohmer could answer that one.

MY GUESS would be that they started on a design with these extra notes, cast some plates and made few, but abandoned it as not worth the trouble. Instead of throwing them in the scrap heap they simply put a regular action in and sold them that way. No consumer would care as long as it sounded good.

Or possibly Sohmer designed the case to be wider for some reason and simply put bridge pins and strings on the otherwise blank end of a bridge that would otherwise expose a big gap if the bridge were shorter?? All aesthetic??
A wider case would allow a little more soundboard area up there and possibly longer ribs.

I read that Irving Berlin owned several Sohmer grands tuned in different keys for easiest transpositions.
Maybe this one was originally set for mounting a transposed action.

That is a strong possibility. 👍
