Apologies for not understanding Apple iOS devices. I'm one of those who prefers value for money over eye candy and cant afford Apple's inflated prices. Certainly in the case of Android it's a USB OTG adapter you need to connect a MIDI device to a phone/tablet. Apple, of course, will have a proprietary alternative to tie you into their closed infrastructure, that's bound to be non-standard. ;-)

Wasn't the Ravenscroft piano for iOS praised here by some?

Sorry to spoil your idyll but Android is not suitable for audio production which is why there are almost no music apps for Android, let alone virtual pianos. Apple CPU-s are immensely more powerful and efficient and that is why there are professional musicians using iPads on stage or even in studios.

It's not (just) the cpu but iOS design for midi/audio support. Audiobus 3 is an example available to app designers.

The VST of your choosing and a cheap 2nd hand laptop might not be a bad idea...

I think it is best in terms of price, performance and simplicity. Maybe less temptation to endlessly tweak.

However, setting it up might take a bit of effort.

I run Pianoteq on a competitor to the Raspberry Pi (Odroid N2+). It's great little device, very cool ... but it falls squarely in DIY territory - especially if you want to make it into a portable sound module. You can build it for US$100-200 - but you are going to have to build it.

On Android, Fluidsynth with your selection of sounds from https://sites.google.com/site/soundfonts4u/ is a great option
