I don't think this has been posted here previously.

I was fortunate enough to catch him with this quartet in Washington D.C. in 1978 at the Warner Music Theater.

Wow, I would have loved to have seen that band play live. Here is another full concert...

The 2 quartets are my favorite period of Jarrett. He wrote very catchy and inventive "tunes". The Windup - oh my god. And he did it with major triads. And then there's Spiral Dance.

I had a hope/dream that he'd one day return to another version of those roots. I never got to see him with the American quartet.

At least he left us plenty of recordings with these amazing bands. His scope was so vast, so many different styles. I like it all (almost) but these quartets were the best.

Beeboss, you are very much correct. Keith covered a lot of creative musical real estate, and did it superbly. I've always been especially fond of "Treasure Island". And his compositions (tunes) for this band which included Dewey Redman, Charlie Haden and Paul Motian. In large part inspired by Ornette Coleman. And how was Keith able to make music inspired by Ornette's avant garde/free approach ? By employing the lowly major trial. In doing so, Keith broke new ground - at least to my mind and ears. I believe these recordings deserve more attention, similar to what Miles Davis "Bitches Brew" receives.

A couple of examples.

Yeah, Treasure Island is a masterpiece. I remember my aunt gave me a copy for my 15th birthday, just 40 years ago. It still sounds fresh. It is a shame that nobody else ever plays these tunes, I guess they don't dare lest they are compared with Keith. I don't know any good musicians who aren't influenced by this band though, so the influence is definitely recognised.

Funny you mention that about other musicians. Seems to me there was some sort of compilation album/CD where different musicians chose one Keith song each and recorded it. I'm wanting to say Brad Mehldau was involved. This is a vague recollection.

I got to see Paul Motian at the Village Vanguard. Along with Masabumi Kikuchi and Chris Potter - cant recall the bass player. I felt fortunate to see and hear Paul in that environment. Where he played with both Keith and Bill Evans. Maybe around 2008.

Just some random thoughts. But I love Keith with those raucous drums from Motian back in the '70's . Just love that sound.

Hi Dave

Just had to buy Treasure Island, if only for Le Mistral. What a great recording.
I own a lot of Jarrett already (dozens of albums), but somehow I'd missed this one.

Cheers
