Hello ... I can't seem to beg, borrow or steal a used grand action to experiment /play around with. Just interested in how my piano actually works. There's a model on line for $120; would that fit the bill/be worth it ? Thanks

Two suggestions, if I may:

You can enter your location in your profile, in case one of us lives near you and has a suitable "derelict" available.

You can search on Craigslist. Search under both "for sale > musical instruments" and under "for sale > free stuff". I am in Northern California, and when I looked a few weeks ago, there were three "baby" grands offered for free in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Have fun!

I would agree with Elliot. If you really want to get into regulating piano actions, whether upright or grand, it would be best to get a "freebie", or very cheap piano off of Craigslist. Then you can experiment to your heart's content, without too much worry about making a big mistake (and you'll make some, for sure!).

After you get some confidence, then you can work on your "real" piano!

When you find a piano, I imagine you could hire a local mover to move the action to the back of your car and the rest to a landfill. For a little extra they may even put it on your work table.

Thanks everyone. It seems free junker grands on Craigs List are in high demand at the moment; guess I'll need to wait a while. If anyone in the S.F. bay area needs to lighten their load..have truck, will travel. Thanks again

DC Pianos in Berkeley says they have one. There is one in Walnut Creek, asking $300, but if they cannot sell it, you might be able to pick it up. Actually, you might call around to piano movers and see if they know of one.

Chris, did you find one?
I have a 5-foot Christman & Sons from 1926 that you are welcome to the action out of. Most of the key-tops are broken off, but that probably does not matter? I am in Lake County -- figure three hours drive from the Bay Area.
