How REALISTIC is it of me to find a Pre-Owned STEINWAY Model O or L that I would be able to get thru a dealer in the $25,000-$30,000 range?
I originally asked about dealer percentage off - I asked that because I am seeing many, many Pre-Owned Steinway O's & L's in the $35 - $45k range, (across the board/across the US) Is it realistic to think I would be able to negotiate a 25 - 30k for that grand? Or am I, as my Grandmother used to say, 'smoking Dutch Cleanser'?
Several of you are dealers, have given me 'trusted' and 'reliable' advice in the past I hope to hear from you on this question! wink
thanks so much be kind brdwyguy

Others can talk about the exact state of the market, but a big question may be how used, and how thoroughly (or recently) restored are you talking about? There may be room to wiggle based on those variables.

I think that if you have seen more or less across the board prices in the $35,000.00 to $45,000.00 range for these models, you may have to expect some compromise in what you might get in the price range you suggest. So while it may eventually be possible if not toally realistic, I guess the answer is (without intending to be flippant): "it depends."
The other point I would make is that if your budget is strictly what it is and you don't find and "L" or an "O" within that budget, then perhaps Steinway shouldn't be the only brand you should be looking at. At your price point, I would think that you could find an instrument every bit as good but only if you can accept that being "Steinway" is not the one and only absolute criterion for your search.

If you find one from a dealer in that price range, there is very likely a "catch". Perhaps they would be acceptable compromises for some, like one with an outdated player system or wood finish with some significant sun fading. Other "catches" are that it just isn't a particularly good example from Steinway or that it had a less than ideal history. There are certainly Steinways in any price range, given differing conditions.
Price increases from manufacturers, plus the squeeze on the supply chain for so many new products has at least for the recent past and near future, taken away options. There is a supply & demand problem that will also affect the used market. Maybe that will re-adjust in another 12 months or so? Not sure.

You don't say how old a piano you are willing to consider or whether you're talking about a rebuilt piano or the degree/quality of the rebuild. I don't see how one can answer the question without more information about what you are looking for. Another possibility is a pre-owned rebuilt Steinway.

Better to look at private parties on Craigslist or fb marketplace. You will get a better deal than dealers

It also may be true that a dealer's used piano may be better in tune and better regulated, may come with a warranty (even if limited) and may include delivery and after-delivery tuning. So, not necessarily "better," but another option which should include the buyer's expense of having the piano inspected by a technician. The idea of an independent inspection could, of course, also apply to buying a used piano from a dealer. Regards,

In the end I purchased my piano from a technician. He did spend some time prepare the piano before sale.
