Just finished seeing and hearing this mesmerizing performance of the "Goldbergs" by young Pavel Kolesnikov.

Not for the purists, his use of sustaining pedal is remarkable, bringing a fresh take to the variations.
Alongside Hewitt's recent live performance of the Goldberg's, we're blessed with many interpretations of this landmark work.
Pavel gives a wonderful live performance. His disc on Hyperion is worth getting in my opinion. He builds an interesting soundscape, varying the dynamics and giving the variations a contemporary feel. I even detect a hip hop edge to some of the dance rhythms! He has an interesting buildup in the "Quodiblet", starting off quietly with the sustaingin pedal, building to a cathedral of sound, then dying off again to the final reprise of the "Aria". Worth checking out.

Saw it just now as well. Brilliant interpretation as you say. I have to listen/watch again to really note down the instances in which I feel he really goes down another avenue and explores different dynamics and rhythms. He's come a long way since the Andras Schiff Masterclass 7 years ago at the Royal College of Music. His Goldberg/Dance with Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker was also an interesting blend.

I have three recordings of the Goldbergs, the first and last Gould records, and the Dinnerstein recording. I have to say that Kolesnikov's playing seemed like an entirely different composition -- in a very good way. Yes, the basic "bones" of the piece were there and recognizable but it was totally sui generis in some peculiar way. In fact, it didn't sound like the Goldbergs echoing in my mind all these years, which I think is a great positive! It is a very profound, thrilling, and unique performance.
