Thanks Sebs. While paper score is certainly an option, the only downside is I won't get feedback on whether I'm playing it accurately or not. And that's where PM's scoring feature helps a lot (not to mention the ability to play the two hands separately which again helps with the learning curve). For someone like me who's relatively new to piano those features are a Godsend!

I tested the music score upload and you can create your own practice by chopping the score, changing the tempo and isolate hands. Very useful.

Absolutely! Whatever motivates and if you like that route just keep at it. It can be very helpful with the feedback and learning small sections.


Good to know. Maybe I just didn't experiment with it enough to find that part. I uploaded a few and called it a day now I'll have to go try this. hahah

Hello, I'm a new learner, with absolutely zero musical background looking for advice. I just started playing piano this year (30 days in), and have been using Piano Marvel, to what I feel has been pretty good effect. I've been able to progress through the early sections pretty quickly. I'm just about finished with 3A of Method and on 2E of Technique. I usually try to spend about an hour a day in the software. Other than that, maybe I spend 5-15 minutes in the morning learning/practicing scales/arpeggios. I have good self-discipline and consistency and I'm perfectly fine with grinding through 'boring stuff' at this stage as needed.

Up until now, I've been able to do quite a few Piano Marvel lessons in my day, but I'm hitting the point now where I may not even finish 1 song in the hour. I'm fine with this, it takes as long as it takes.
What I'm wondering about now is efficiency. How is it best for me to progress in the most efficient way possible? Notice I don't say fast - I'm less concerned with how quickly I learn than I am with making the most out the time I'm able to put in.

With this, I'm wondering how people best divide their time. Should I spend my entire time for the day working through the 1 song in Piano Marvel? Should I get it 'close enough' and move onto the next, coming back later when my skill has improved? Or should I spend less of my time on Piano Marvel and start allocating a portion of my time that to other means of learning - books, etc.

I don't have a teacher as of yet. I certainly plan on getting one, but I've been waffling so far about finding a 'Zoom' teacher or just waiting another month or two for COVID restrictions to ease up and attending in-person.

I'm primarily interested in learning classical and would like to work towards my RCM grades, taking exams when I'm ready.

I think you're on the right track, just make sure that technique and method run parallel. Sometimes you need one for the other or the other way around. What you should definitely do is train your sight reading with a book. It's amazing how quickly you become dependent on that blue cursor. There is now the option to dim it or even turn it off (on PC), but it is different from a book. Shouldn't be too difficult, as long as you read and keep playing. And prepare yourself, the further you progress in the levels the longer it will take before you have learned a piece. And above all: Have fun!

For me personally, once I got to 'Arabia' it could take me anything up to a week to complete a lesson to 100%. For that reason, I tend to spend around 15-20 per day on each exercise (Method and Technique).

Like you, I do a session earlier in the day where I practice scales, etc. I also plod my way through a method book.

The pieces that I am playing in PM are simply too difficult to achieve in hours. I need many sleeps for it all to sink in before I'll get close to completing them. I also enjoy seeing the improvement that I’ve made away from the piano.

My experience is that when you get to about 4E, things seem to get exponentially more difficult and require a lot more practice to progress. A LOT more. Which is good I guess, it means you are learning the harder stuff.

Song of the week again...

That's pretty good going, I have a little bit of previous experience and am only on 3B method & 2D Tech after 3 1/2 months, although I am simultaneously going through the Alfred book 1 which just happens to be within the software as well. It's good to mix it up and look at a book so you don't feel so reliant on the moving screen. Sometimes I just mess around playing some common right hand chords with the bass note in the left hand, I learnt this with 'Simply Piano' and kind of lets you 'play' basic pop songs accompaniment.

I’ve been on 'Mexican Hat Dance' for a few days now. It looked like it was going to be fairly easy at first but it introduces a new technique where the melody passes back and forth between the hands.
I can see this one being very beneficial as at the moment my brain tends to freeze at these points and it will be quite an accomplishment when I can instantly flip between the two.
As I’m still on the slow version, I could be on this one for a while
