Folks, thanks for the feedback.

I took a quick look at the Yamaha CP88. It appears that Yamaha keys are shorter than the Kawai keys. According to some of reviews I’ve read the key action gets heavier the closer you get to the top of the key. This is one of my very few hot buttons - key action must be as close to a grand piano as possible.

The CP88 looks like a very good stage piano, with some very nice features. Unfortunately the balance of features is not right for me.

Again, thank you for the suggestions.

Regards,

Dan.

Well, the odiferous matter finally hit the whirling blades!

Tonight I fixed the (hopefully) last of the sticky keys, but when the MP11 was powered on, there was no midi signal coming out and the right channel was dead when headphones were plugged directly into the headphone jack. I think my mp11 is dead.

I suspect that the MP11 could be fixed, but is it worth it? How long would it take? At what cost? I’m not sure and I’m don’t think I want to take a chance.

At this point, I don’t think buying another Kawai DP is a good idea. But no other DP has a better key action. After playing the Yamaha hybrids, I don’t want one of those. That leaves the Kawai NV10. But it’s very pricey.

I’m not sure what to do now. frown

Dan.

Sorry to hear that you. Perhaps you can double check all of the connections going into the different PCBs to ensure that nothing has become dislodged?

The MP11 is still an excellent instrument. If I were in your position, I would definitely try to have it fixed, if I was unable to do so myself.

Kind regards,
James

Hmm, my right channel on the headphones is also gone. I've checked the connections while working on the sticky keys, they look fine. But now I am going to wince each time I power on.

MP11 is an excellent instrument, but some of the issues with this keyboard are disconcerting.

If you removed the keyslip, the headphone jack cable is really short and is guaranteed to be disconnected. You have to be really careful to reinsert it correctly when you put the keyslip back on.

Folks,

Thanks for the feedback. The MP11 is now working (partially).

After retesting this morning, I noticed that the MIDI light was not flashing on my Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 audio interface when I pressed an MP11 key. After swapping the MIDI cables on the MP11 (out —> in and in —> out) all was well! With the headphones plugged into the 2i4, Pianoteq worked like it should have - good sound on both headphone channels when connected to the 2i4. However...

The right MP11 headphone channel is still dead when headphones are connected directly to the MP11. Note that, before reassembling the MP11, I rechecked the cables carefully. All were connected correctly and fully plugged in.

While I’m still a bit disappointed, I can live with the dead right channel because MP11 signals are always MIDI-routed through the Focusrite 2i4 (great audio interface, BTW). And headphones are always connected to the 2i4. This provides great audio routing options for Zoom, Internet MIDI, etc.

So this resolves my current issues with the MP11. I’d like to get a better digital piano, like an NV11 or VPC2 in the future, but I’m good for the short term.

Again, many thanks for the great feedback.

Best regards,

Dan.

P.s. I marked the MIDI cables during the last MP11 fix (#3 or #4), but the label wasn’t clear. Since the MIDI cables are 10 ft long and are routed behind the shelves, this is important and it’s easy to connect them to the wrong port. So I relabeled them and all should be well for the next repair.
