Has anyone else experienced this odd phenomenon? Every time I sit in front of a piano in my dreams, I am unable to remember pieces I play very well and which are concrete in my memory. The other night I had a dream that I was playing K.332 and just couldn't remember a note of it... a sonata ive played dozens of times in concert in the waking world. Also, there is a weird thing where the keyboards themselves are odd... often very cheap and small, like little Casio keyboards, and there are technical issues. This prolly stems from my non classical performing life where I have to deal with electronic keyboards, and there are a lot of moving parts which could go wrong.

Anyone else?

And ill share one more dream. I have a tremendous fear of heights, and recently in a dream I was hired to be an organist in a church. The organ rested high in the church in a tower (think the tower in Hogwarts Castle), and I had to climb step after step... and it was at such a height that I was terrified to play. Now, I have a new respect of organ music, and consider it a music of great height (and power). I have always been a Messiaen fanatic, and never understood his organ music... until this dream. And what's more, I now kind of seek out the sense of being at a great height.

My recurring dream is that I'm about to walk on stage, but I haven't learned the piece I have to play.

For me it's the opposite, in my dreams I can play much better, I can play any tune there that I ever heard, full version with all the other notes, even if I never played it for real or ever saw the score.

>I now kind of seek out the sense of being at a great height.

What do you mean here? You want to play music from a scary high position?

I also have quite regularly dreams of scary heights. Usually scary because the place I'm standing on is unstable, like a ladder placed insecurely, slippery path at the edge of a cliff, bottoms of elevators being half-open, etc

Yes all the time. Keyboards being odd and I want to impress "everyone" knowing I could do it if I just had a normal piano! Bruised ego dreams =p

Oh I just meant that what I used to fear I am now interested in. That dangerous feeling of being hugely alive at a scary height is now interesting to me. And I would love to somehow translate that into my playing, especially in music which represents height. And also, right or wrong, I feel a sense of height in organ music... the same sense you get when you clean your gutters or climb a little too close to the edge of a mountain

All it takes to achieve transcendental music skills is a little head trauma.

I share your fear of heights.

There is a film called "A Canterbury Tale" by Powell and Pressburger, it is a black and white film and quite late in it there is a scene where Dennis Price gets to play the organ in Canterbury Cathedral. Probably totally irrelevant but it came to mind reading your post.

My dreams generally concern "ze flying helmets und ze vet celery......" occasionally in thongs.... wink

Not to get off the subject too much, this is music meant to be played with great heights... and obviously the birds are masters of height. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtJMQMw5kz0

I think as a Messiaen pianist, this dream was pivotal for me.

I just hope I dont get asked to play these works in a dream!

Over twenty years on forums there have been numerous reports of members dreaming of playing poorly on grotesque instruments; I have had a few such dreams myself. It is so common among pianists that some psychological basis has to exist but I have insufficient knowledge to speculate about its nature.

Me too. Unplayable keyboards. Even more often, I have a concert performance in a day or two and haven't practiced anything. I only started having the second dream when I stopped practicing countless hours a day.
