Very nice! You are clearly enjoying your new piano and I wish you many more years of it. It sounds great, as does your playing.

I love the updates on your Petrof. It is a beautiful sounding and looking grand. Keep us posted. It must be especially rewarding because it’s your own work on your own piano. Like Rickster. All I can do is enjoy a finished product. I can’t do the work to improve anything other than gentle dust and clean and call a piano technician to tune or voice or regulate it.

Emery,
Thanks for sharing, particularly the video. I love the mounted lamp just off to the side of the piano. That would not have occurred to me but looks like a great solution.
Enjoy the piano - and keep the videos coming. I enjoy your playing.

Thanks everyone. I'm glad to be beyond the tweaking phase and onto the playing. Now onto more practicing and optimizing my recording setup!

Yes Blueviewlaguna, seller is original owner. You'll hear in the moving video below that he's had it for 20 years (it's a 1999), and it hadn't been moved until now. You also learn in the video that a Petrof grand is a good place to hide under in the event of an earthquake You are right, the recording sounded good, and especially the playing! Rick

Hi SK. The piano is a 1999 Petrof. I use a Rode NT4 X/Y mic, and a cheap MXL 990 condensor mic as a room mic. I have the piano on full stick and position the Rode mic near the stick, about 1/3 of the way up from the strings and the top of the lid. I used to have it more inside the piano in the middle, a few inches above the dampers, but that picked up too much damper noise. I put the room mic under the piano, somewhere near the middle. This results in 3 lines going to the interface: two from the Rode, and one from the room mic. I use a Focusrite interface.
I'm by no means an expert on miking, but Aimee Nolte used an NT4 for a long time, and I liked how her videos sounded. The room mic adds a natural reverb and more fullness to the mix. It's not as clean as I've heard from recordings using more expensive mics, but that may also be due to the acoustics in my living room. My next project is to hang some damping material from the ceiling above the piano to see if that tightens things up.
Thank you for the kind words, I'm glad you like how the recording sounds.

Gyaa, that kind of mic'ing is beyond me... Perhaps some day. But maybe I'll put my piano on the full stick next time and see if that makes a difference in the recording...

If you have an interface that can take at least 3 mic inputs, you can do it. Next time I mic it I'll post a picture so you can see. It's actually quite simple. However you could do it without the room mic, just run an x/y mic into an interface with two inputs. You'll just have to play with mic position until you get what you like.
I've posted this before, but have you looked at Sangah Noonah's tutorial on miking a piano? Search for it on YouTube, she runs through many options, from the simplest being a cell phone, all the way up to twin condensor mics that she uses. It really helps you to understand the options, and hear the effects of each.

I grew up with a black Felix-the-Cat clock in my bedroom!
Casio PX-S3000 Nope, no issues with it at all. Took lessons from 1960 to 1969, stopped at age 16. Started again in July 2020 at age 67. Lots more fun now!

Congratulations Emery, love your piano. Such, cool sophisticated playing . Amazing that you did all this work on your piano. When I just open the lid on my upright just to look in , I feel brave. So nice of Petrof to respond so quickly and send you what you needed too!
