Title of piece:She Moves and Eyes Follow
Composer:Jim Webb
Duration:03:43
Source of music:Sheet Music -- The Songs of Jimmy Webb
Instrument used:Kawai baby grand 5.5'
Recording method:TASCAM 40 320 Mb
Technical feedback wanted:Yes
Additional info:I thought I'd provide one "gem" from the Pop world: it is Jimmy Webb's "She Moves and Eyes Follow". Webb is, of course, a very well known songwriter and I think one of the best in the business. He apparently wrote this one very early in his career. I find the whole piece just meltingly beautiful, with a rather cryptic but beautiful lyric to match.

Title of piece:Forgotten Dreams

Instrument used:Schimmel Grand
Recording method:Zoom H2N
Technical feedback wanted:Yes
Additional info:Here is a sentimental journey back to the 1950s when mom and dad relaxed in the evening next to the Victrola playing light classics. Now that mid-Century design is hip, why not enjoy a little Leroy Anderson. Who can forget Fiddle Faddle, Typewriter, and The Syncopated Clock? So sit back with your comfort food - that would be a grilled cheese sandwich with a cup of Campbell's tomato soup for me - and enjoy a slice of Americana.

Additional info:This is a rare gem for sure with the title Emerald. I found this piece a year after my daughter was born. I think of her every time I play it. Enjoy!
I got the sheet music at http://www.jenniferbowmanmusic.com/
The composer also has works for solo piano describing covid times called preludes for an uncertain time.

Title of piece:All through the night (from British melodies)
Composer:Cyril Scott
Duration:01:47
Source of music:Sheet music
Instrument used:Yamaha AvantGrand N1
Recording method:Zoom H1
Technical feedback wanted:Yes
Additional info:Cyril Scott wrote three pieces based on British tunes. More or less accidentally I discovered these pieces and desided to submit two of them here since they are obviously not very welll known. "All through the night" is the first of the set. The harmonies are quite interesting and may sound a bit jazzy from time to time. Some of the chords are a bit large for my small hands, but I hope I caught the essence of the pieces.

Title of piece:The wild hills of Clare. From British melodies
Composer:Cyril Scott
Duration:01:59
Source of music:Sheet music
Instrument used:Yamaha AvantGrand N1
Recording method:Zoom H1
Technical feedback wanted:Yes
Additional info:"The wild hills of Clare" is the second of the British Melodies. I find it the most emotional of the three pieces of the set. Like the first one the chords are a bit large for me, but I try my best to make music out of it. Some of the harmonic turns, especially near the end, are quite surprising.

Additional info:I love this piece! I couldn't wait until this recital and submitted it to the regular recital in February, as soon as I learned it more or less. This recording was done a couple of months later for my teacher's virtual recital; hopefully it's a more relaxed version. Some people might find this piece too sentimental, but I just love its emotional and melancholy character.

Title of piece:Confidencias
Composer:Ernesto Nazareth
Duration:06:07
Source of music:Sheet Music
Instrument used:Kawai VPC1 and Pianoteq
Recording method:Digital to PC
Technical feedback wanted:Yes
Additional info:I have been reading on the forum a long time, so I thought it was maybe time to contribute something. Dont want to get tangled up in the discussions, so I play something.

Normally I (try to) get up a 5 in the morning to practice a few hours. All for myself with headphones. Nobody outside my family really hears me ever play, so it is rather confidential. Now I share it with you, Confidencias. Still dont know how I got confident enough to upload it in the first place.

About the piece: It is a slow, sentimental valse. It is not too difficult, but difficult to get the rhythm right. Off course I screw up a few times, but thats me, always do that, cant do better unfortunately. Fast arpeggio runs up and down is where the Pros get separated from the amateurs. Yes, it still needs some work here and there.

Ernesto Nazareth was a Brazilian composer. Music is from around 1900. It is a bit at the border between classical and popular. He played piano at the Odeon cinema in Rio de Janeiro. Some of the music indeed seems to fit perfectly silent film. He was inspired by the rhythms of the local music. He composed many small pieces, quite virtuoso some of them. Especially Brazilian Tangos ( Maxixe, but he didnt want to call it like that). It is great fun to play, short pieces, very good for development of technical skills (big jumps, fast repeated chords, runs, rhythms etc).

Title of piece:Sonatina in F major
Composer:Ignaz Pleyel
Duration:01:50
Source of music:IMSLP
Instrument used:Yamaha DGX 220
Recording method:Tascam and Audacity
Technical feedback wanted:Yes
Additional info:I don't think Pleyel has appeared in the recitals before and most people probably think of the brand of piano before the composer himself. I considered that enough to fit his piece in as rare. Whether the piece is a gem or not, I'll let you decide. It should be allegro, but I couldn't get it up to speed on time without sacrificing accuracy. This sonatina is undoubtedly not Pleyel's finest piano music but it was one that I could attempt at my skill level. For those unfamiliar with his work, I would encourage you to listen. Mozart certainly admired him, saying, "Pleyel should replace Haydn for us."

Title of piece:Evening Stroll
Composer:Bela Bartok
Duration:01:44
Source of music:Sheet Music, Discovering Piano Literature Volume 3
Instrument used:Casio PX-700 Digital Piano
Recording method:GarageBand on Mac
Technical feedback wanted:Yes
Additional info:I discovered this piece from the Discovering Piano Literature collection which is very fitting the theme of this recital. I am already a huge fan of Bela Bartok, so it seemed a no-brainer when I ran into this one a few months ago. My interoperation turned out to be very melancholic without a serious intention to do so - I naturally gravitate towards overlaying gloomy moods on a lot of pieces that I play. This comes in contrast with my general upbeat attitude towards life, so the fact that I keep choosing pensive pieces for my repertoire is a surprise to me. Perhaps, it allows me to settle into meditative flow making the experience enjoyable and sought after. Either way, the goal accomplished - I found pleasure in learning this piece, and I enjoyed playing it. Hopefully, some notes from thing song will trigger positive experience for you as well.

Title of piece:Piano Sonata No.1 'Sonata-Fantasy' Movement I. Vivace
Composer:Nikolai Kapustin
Duration:04:44
Source of music:Sheet Music published by Schott
Instrument used:Roland FP-50
Recording method:Direct from my keyboard
Technical feedback wanted:Yes
Additional info:[Partially Copied from my YT video]
I first discovered this sonata while listening to a CD Kapustin himself released of his concert etudes. The sonata weaves so many different styles of soundscapes together into a wonderful fantasy. One of the particularly challenging things about just this first movement is finding the melody and making sure it does not get lost in the non-stop sea of notes. Take care to listen to the left hand melody starting at 1:03. It continues to come back again and again through the rest of the piece.

This piece (as well as Kapustin's oeuvre in general) certainly feels like a rare gem. It's easy to fall in love with his music, and yet it isn't as well-recorded, nor known by the average pianist, as much of the more standard repertoire.

Kapustin recently passed away; I hope this video serves as a fitting tribute.

Feedback welcome!
