Hi,

So I was working on Burgmuller's Ballade and Arabesque and there were some parts I was just not getting and that sounded pretty bad and had huge pauses when I got to those parts of the song. Now honestly, some of this was because I hadn't been practicing. However, I finally am now. When I first sat down to really practice those parts I found challenging, which, for me in Ballade is the last two lines of the first page. It wasn't going so well. But then I isolated those last two lines and really went over them and finally it clicked and it felt like AHA I finally am getting it. I love those moments at the piano when something that you were not getting at first you finally are able to play correctly.

Making progress with a piece often happens in step changes rather than gradual continuous improvement and it’s great when you suddenly make that major step forward as you say. I use this knowledge when deciding whether to work on a great piece that seems far too difficult at first. I‘ve often proved to myself that if I keep plugging away at it as you have done with the Ballade, I will get there eventually and surprise myself resulting in a great AHA moment. So if anyone has ever wanted to play that amazing piece of music that you thought you would never be capable of playing, I say go for it! 😊

I hear you. I have been practicing just nine bars that were giving me a problem in a piece everyday since last week. I think the penny dropped yesterday when I said to myself ''this is actually quite easy'' smile

Surprisingly easy, barely an inconvenience.
