Hi,

I have not posted in a really long time. I feel off the MOYD wagon majorly and was not practicing. Finally, I got tired of not playing well and not being prepared for my piano lessons. I had discussed my lack of not practicing with my teacher and told him how I was trying to practice 1-2 hours a day and was timing my practice session. He advised me to try just practicing because it is fun to do and not focus on timing myself. Before I would set my timer on my phone for 1 hour, but all I would do was keep looking at my phone to see how long I had left. I do love playing the piano and taking lesson, but I was just in a bad rut.

Finally, 2 days ago I tried my teacher's advise and didn't time myself and just practiced to practice and because it is fun. It actually was very fun and I found that I was able to sit at my piano longer than I usually do when I set my timer. Also, I keep a practice journal and now instead of putting how long I practiced I put a P for that day to show that I have practiced. Not only is it fun, but I want to practice and I am seeing improvement in my playing already. I am so excited for my lesson on this Friday to show my piano teacher what I have been working on and how I have improved.

I never time my practices. As I'm going through my pre-practice rigamarole (opening up the piano, moving out the bench, etc), I kind of go through in my mind which pieces I'd like to get to that day. I keep a log, which is very abbreviated and merely lists the composer, the piece, and which measures I worked on and any other piece of information (e.g. metronome) that might be useful for me the next time I practice the piece. I find it rewarding to see the days and pieces pile up.

I think we have to make room for both formal and informal practice. I have started giving myself days off and not feel bad about it and its working.

Surprisingly easy, barely an inconvenience.

I don't time my practices. I'd work on a section of music until I'm satisfied with the results. When I'm working on difficult pieces, I'd tackle the same sections at least twice a day to make sure the notes stick in my head.

If I'm playing a familiar piece that is under 5m, my practice session can be just 15m. When I'm learning the notes to a new piece, the practice can drag on for more than an hour.

I think timing is a very bad idea. Think of a sequence of small steps. Then you'll be counting what you've achieved in your practice session, not how much time you have left.
