Lang Lang's piano is out of tune.
No technician's around because of the pandemic ?

Well I find it hard to believe my cell.phone is giving a
dreadful jarring sound.

I loved it. The room he’s in really isn’t really ideal for recording.

Loved the Goldberg pieces.

It's an upright isn't it ? OK, maybe he's trying to portray a more simple image (in a mansion with marble floors ) during this time ? That's admirable but at least tune the darn thing !

He's a great player and Artist, I just find this a bit bizarre.

The same piano was also featured last night in the worldwide concert, where he accompanied several singers in "The Prayer". Despite the acoustics, the piano sounds awful(ly) bright.

I noticed the out-of-tune-ness as well, but I thought that maybe he doesn't spend much time at his home with his touring schedule, and when he finally got home, he was not able to get the piano tuned? I'm trying to cut him some slack because the tuning was verging on terrible...

Interesting performance.
I liked the piano tone.
Are you all sure it was out of tune and not an alternative tuning?
Like A435 or a well temperament?
Just asking, as nothing sounded totally off like specific notes half a step out or wolf notes.
Can anyone point out specifically where it sounds out of tune or explain what you are hearing?
Maybe I need to train my listening more!

I’ve always enjoyed Lang Lang’s playing. I can appreciate the beauty of the performance and of the pianos voice in spite of the fact it is out of tune. I can hear it in certain chords because I know how it’s supposed to sound. To my hearing, if a single note stands out in a chord, likely it’s out of tune. The note will almost pop.

It sounds like an out of tune piano that's below standard pitch, played artistically. With some different LH note choices here and there in the Chopin from the editions I typically use for teaching.

Of course many of us will become used to playing an out of tune piano in the near future!

I just remember something... for those who could detect the piano was out of tune, I guess you probably have perfect pitch. I read somewhere that some (or most of us) do not have perfect pitch and cannot tell if the whole piano is evenly out-of-tune (not terribly of course)...

You definitely don’t need perfect pitch to know a piano is out of tune.

Being able to tell whether a piano is or isn't in tune has nothing to do with whether or not one has perfect pitch. If one or more of the unisons is out of tune with its strings of the same pitch, one can certainly hear that the notes - and the piano - are out of tune.

Regards,
Most people have relative pitch .If however.one is around a number of instruments, or if you have to
tune a violin or a guitar you can develope a higher
level of listening. The other way is to have a teacher
who helps one develop "through ear tests "a much
higher degree of listening this would ultimately
help in performance when playing.

What I don't get is why a performer of Lang Lang's caliber doesn't have a simple laptop, interface, and halfway decent condensor mic. Sounds like this was recorded on a cell phone. I had a better setup for my Skype piano lessons.

And oh yeah, as mentioned already, surely this guy understands room acoustics???
