Had my piano lesson today. Only played a few minutes at home.

I played through Etude in C, Burlesque in G Major, Freres Jacques Stands on His Head, and Mist. I think I did "passably well" on all but Etude in C. None of them were as good as I hoped. Also started doing some online clapback videos on youtube. Rhythms and counting are probably my weakest skill. Definitely need more work there.

Got a video of Etude in C Major (Felix Le Couppey): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GtsfLskXcZU

I think it sounds okay, I did pause near the middle/end.

Spent the majority of my practice time today trying to figure out how to play softly in the right hand while loud in the left. Not exactly my strong suit yet!

Pretty inspirational thread! I started in a similar position as you and frankly, the pandemic has been a godsend for practice time. I appreciate the detail you provided on what you started on and how much progress you made over the first few months. I'm somewhere in month 2 and working with the Faber books for older beginners and Piano Marvel. I'm also watching the Theory course on youtube you suggested.

I'm not making quite the rapid progress you did but I'm making steady gains. Keep posting! At least one person is listening and enjoying your videos!

One question. I haven't seemed to run across anything yet instructing me on practicing scales. Maybe I'm not far enough along, but what did you use to learn that?

One question. I haven't seemed to run across anything yet instructing me on practicing scales. Maybe I'm not far enough along, but what did you use to learn that?

My first resource for scales was: https://www.pianoscales.org/major.html ; this has all the scales that I've come across thus far and has correct fingering for each. I would say that everything that starts on a white key is fairly "simple" except figuring out how to play B and F Major. I've found myself a little blocked/slow on learning the Major/Minors that start on flats and sharps (trying to work on that, doing C# Major this week). I've also seen some videos that once you get the fingering figured out, you should vary up the rhythms, dynamics and such. So I'll play patterns like eighth, eighth, quarter (repeat through the scale) while trying to make each finger sound even. Or I'll do stacatto. It opens up some possibilities when you are able to start doing RH and LH at the same time.

I think I'm ready for the RCM1 exam with respect to my pieces. Now it's all about the sight reading and ear training that I need to make progress on. My sight reading and counting time are probably my two easiest to identify weaknesses. RCM did send me a thing stating they needed to move back my exam and move it to online, which might make it easier, as they send the sight reading pieces 24 hours in advance of the exam so I can work on them a bit.

Posted this in another thread, but thought it belongs here too:
