I have a Kawaii ES110 that I purchased a number of months ago.
This week, for the first time I tried to use MIDI with it, connecting it to my Windows laptop and my iPhone, with a MIDI to USB converter.
• The ES110 can receive input sent from my laptop or iPhone and play. But I can't get it to send any MIDI output to be received by the laptop or iPhone.
• I've tried two different MIDI to USB converters. Neither cable shows any flashing LEDs when playing the ES110.
• The Windows MIDI-OX app isn't showing any MIDI output traffic for the ES110 when I'm playing the keyboard. Neither is the iOS app MIDI Wrench. From both those apps, I can send MIDI to play on the ES110.
• The ES110's Bluetooth MIDI is working - MIDI Wrench and MIDIBerry (on the laptop) can connect to the Bluetooth MIDI and receive the MIDI traffic when I play the ES110. (My music app of preference, ScoreCloud, can't use Bluetooth MIDI).
• Another test I did was with a 10-year-old iPhone 3GS with a very old iRig MIDI adapter. While recording with the iRig MIDI app, it is showing data MIDI data being received from the ES110 and the app is able to playback the MIDI recording.

Does anyone have an explanation why my laptop and recent iPhone cannot receive MIDI from the ES110 with a MIDI to USB converter, but my my 10-year-old iPhone+iRig can receive the MIDI?

These are the two USB MIDI converters I've tried:

OK. It's clearly the cheap MIDI to USB converters.
I just connected my laptop and ES110 with a DigiDesign MBox2, and the ES110's MIDI output is being received by the laptop.

Be wary of cheap MIDI to USB converters.

Hello drudru, welcome to the forum.

This!

I should also add that I believe the MIDI connectors will be disabled when Bluetooth MIDI is enabled (and a device is paired).

Regarding Bluetooth on the laptop, I assume you are using Windows 10 (because of MIDIberry) - good to hear that this combination worked for you.

Kind regards,
James
