I've got a Sony D50 PCM recorder, and was just wondering on best position for recording a grand (with the lid up). Not sure how far away it should be?

Looking at it it appears the microphones are in an XY stereo arrangement. There are loads of you tube vidoes out there on miking Grand Pianos - but this one covers the basics of an x-y configuration

This is a great subject and there is no one correct answer. It depends on the mics, but also the particular piano. The simple answer with self contained recorders like yours is to experiment. Start with a few feet away from the piano. You might want to use a mic. stand to get an ideal height for the recorder.

Does your recorder have mic. inputs? If so, you could then use closely placed specialty mics. and record into the unit.

Good luck and keep us posted.
