Lots of good advice up above:
  • Don't rush
  • Try before you buy
  • Have it inspected

If you're a discriminating player, you should consider traveling to make your purchase. Don't just buy whatever the closest shop has. Your money will likely go farther if you're buying in a larger metro area. The local tech with whom you already have a good relationship should be able to service your piano regardless of where it comes from. Most big dealers can ship anywhere. The few "destination" dealerships definitely can.
Good luck in your search.

If you like the Grotrian or any of the others, get an independent technician to check the pianos out .
They can check to see if the tuning pins are tight. If it is only from the 70's ,it could be still an excellent instrument to restore.,Depending on cost of course.

I cannot play any of these pianos, the only reasonable thing to suggest is:

1) Hire a tech to inspect the piano you liked.
2) All these pianos are a little old I will favor the Yamaha C3 or the KG-2

You can do better on some brands/models, but at least you can get a relative idea.

Thanks for that lead. I had seen it already, but wasn't sure how to apply it. They have a year end sale where I am looking. I compared and the prices on the pianos I'm looking at are between 35% and 45% below the SMP on the Piano Buyer list.

I paid 37% below SMP for my Kawai, and I know several people on the forum who got even better discounts for Kawais, but I think they were all GLs as I recall. It will be interesting to see if you find the discount level the same for GX.

The discount level for the GX3 was 44% below SMP. And they offered free delivery for 70 miles away. The dealer said they got a special deal on it, that a GX2 they expect arrival on shortly will be priced about the same as my (soon to be) GX3.
