I’m quite impressed with the way you are meeting your nemesis head on.

I think one of the most useful ideas to help with the technical difficulties in that piece is something John Mortensen said in one of his videos. Every time there is a triplet of the same chord, only the last one should be loud and the first two can be quite soft. IOW the 16ths are played softly and the 8th much louder.

Haha. Nice video. Welcome back. I am playing a Rach prelude as well. I picked an easier one. The G minor one is a very difficult one and I was advsied against it so good luck! I was advised to listen to Lugansky to get the style for the prelude I am learning and have put in a link to him playing the G minor one. It seemed to help for me. I think you need to make it more staccato and snappy. I think less pedal in places. I think helps with the jumps and the speed.

Thanks Moo. I have already seen Luganski’s performances and even have his album on my iTunes. His G minor prelude performance is stunning!

This prelude is the latest prelude I’ve learned (now revisiting). The previous ones being C# minor, D major and G# minor. Now that I’ve said it, it means I haven’t learn any new Rach preludes for at least 5 years!

I'm working on this prelude as well. Those are my trouble spots too, but I also struggle with memorization which is really needed to play the A section.

I've put it in Time Out for a couple of weeks to see if it behaves any better after it has had time to think about how it's frustrating me.

Me too! I have so many memory blackout spots I can only play a section at a time, maybe 2. This is the second time I am revisiting the piece and I’m suspecting it won’t be the last!

The first time I learned this piece must be about 5 years ago and it was almost impossible to play. Now it has been downgraded to very difficult. I wonder when this piece will become manageable for me...

Same, I tried learning it about 12 years ago, and at the time I didn't have very good instruction on practice techniques plus it was way beyond me at the time. Now I feel I can give it a better shot - it's already much easier, but I also have a better strategy that seems to help.

With pieces like these, once you conquer them, you love them enough to keep them somewhat alive, or if you need to bring it back it doesn't take as much.
