I wonder how many started after a serious medical scare that could have resulted in too late now.

How long after? Is 6.5 years after, too long after?

Did the scare add motivation to making the decision to play the piano. In my case it wasn’t even a matter of moving something from a bucket list, I should do that sooner before it is too late, but more of I need something else in my life.

Well, one of my favorite things got moved onto the verboten list by the wife, and several other things I enjoyed such as climbing and mountaineering seemed less accessible after my accident, so it actually has been a "I need something else in my life" thing - but I guess it took 6.5 years to get to that point. Unlike you, I didn't have any childhood experience with it, so I sort of entered this blind, but 18 months along my journey, I'm glad I did.

I suppose more generally, what has been the motivation for adult beginner or returners to start, and what is the motivation and discipline that keeps those who stick with it going?

Your motorbike accident sounds horrendous. Six and a half years seems like a long time, but I can imagine there was a long time of rehab, then the concrete realisation that certain things are off the table, and then the search for something new. So it makes sense.

I stole it from Instagram, but credited the poster. She said it wasn’t hers, originally, though so who knows from where it came! Have at it!

Me too! I dumped my FB in April 2018 and miss it even less than I thought I would.

My biggest push into learning piano was finally getting over all of my childhood baggage of being told I wasn't good at anything. Actually, now that I think about it, I think my catalyst can be traced back to back pain. I started doing yoga for it, which led to meditation as well. This brought the idea of letting go of things that didn't serve me, and a lot of things changed in my life, including learning piano (and getting rid of Facebook). Interesting...
