According to Flight Aware, Norwegian's next flight from Gatwick to Orlando is at 1130 am BST, about 5 hours from now. I hope it goes without any more hitches.

I'm getting the 1345 LGW-MCO.

I'll be in Orlando 17.55 local time.

I'm now trying to negotiate a connection to HSV. My travel agent helps.

Norwegian air has been deplorable. A customer service representative turned his back on me while I was talking to him. I didn't raise my voice or swear, but I told him the policy is in clear violation of the EU charter of rights... and yes we are still in the EU right now! (Somebody pull the plug on Brexit please?)

Norwegian is a low cost airline, expect terrible service even when things go as planned.

You get what you pay for really applies to aviation when talking service.

I just noticed that Joe's last leg terminates in Huntsville! That's still quite a hike from Tuscaloosa. I hope all the flights and connections are going ok.

Joe,
You should consider going to LA. That is not the LA in California. The Panhandle of Florida is called LA as in Lower Alabama. Have been to Pensacola, which has beautiful beaches, many times.
I am from the southernmost part of Missouri. I picked cotton as a child. Have spent a lot of time in the South.
When in Destin I heard speech in a language I could not recognize. My brother told me it was English and the man was probably from Alabama. My brother has lived in Tennessee for many years.
Don't be surprised if it takes you a while to grasp the language.

This is true. Someone who has a really "thick" and heavy southern accent can be hard to understand. They don't fully enunciate and pronounce their words plainly, and really slur the vowels. My southern accent is not quite as "thick" but I have gotten a lot comments on my YouTube music videos where people comment about my southern accent. Still, I think most people can understand me.

I worked at a community technical college for many years, and a speech teacher, who was from the northeastern US told me that my southern accent was not as thick as some she has heard, and she could understand me well. I took that as a compliment.

But I do like to hear someone who speaks clearly and plainly, and is very articulate. Most people form their first impressions of you based on the first few words that come out of your mouth, usually. smile

Ok guys I've made it.

So I've good friends in Huntsville who put me up for the night and then drove me down to T-town.

The travel agent got me a new connecting flight with Delta, it actually stopped in Atlanta where I changed, so now I know Atlanta is only a 30 minute flight from Birmingham or Huntsville (I'm guessing in flying terms it makes little difference which of these two airports one flies into, kind of like the difference between Glasgow or Edinburgh).

I'm not so much jet-lagged as so tired from lack of sleep. Also, I've had a little trouble adjusting to American food, but now that I'm in accommodation I have been to the supermarket and bought a trolley load of vegetables and organic meats. In every restaurant/cafe/sandwich shop I've tried here there has been sugar or HFCS in everything, even the savoury food, and that's quite difficult for me to cope with! I went to starbucks and got a peach flavoured green tea, and they said "do you want it sweetened or unsweetened", so I opted for unsweetened and STILL it was like drinking candy! The upside is everyone is really nice, accommodating, friendly, and the service down here is excellent. My next task is to get a bank account, a cell phone with a USA number, and get to the gym. I feel sluggish after all that travel.

I live in America now, and saying that feels a bit weird still! Once I get settled and stuck in to classes I can plan some trips.

Tips and tricks: Never ordered flavored tea hot or iced. In the south and Texas it’s always sweetened.
Fast food joints, Airport food and chain restaurants typically go overboard with portions, and butter, and fried stuff. Grocery shop at farmers markets. In regular grocery stores there’s usually a health food section promising “clean food” - non GMO, no artificial flavors or preservatives. What you call a trolley is called a shopping cart. If you find the portion too big in a restaurant, you can ask for a “doggie bag” to put the uneaten portion in and take it home for later.
Sporting events offer a big selection of unhealthy but tasty food such as hotdogs, burgers, and nachos.
Take out and delivery is a big deal here. Tons of pizza places and different Asian kitchens to suite your taste. And most restaurant wait staff in a sit down restaurant make small wages so they rely on customer tips for a living wage. 15 to 20 percent is typical. I’ll think of some other American idiosyncrasies later. We are a weird group overall but are OK when you get used to us. 😄

Edit: I'm removing my post. I don't have a good word to say about Alabama. I was fortunate to escape.

The US is a big country that the mainland, the contiguous 48, cover 4 time zones. We have many regional accents. We think we are so different from one state or another but we’re much more similar than different. The biggest differences are the bugs, wildlife, and the weather. There is some differences in the diet and fresh food variations. Never order Mexican food in the south. You get ketchup covering your CheezWhiz enchiladas. Wait until you’re in California, Arizona, or New Mexico. Alabama does have nice beaches. Which is the place to be in the “dog days of summer”.

Glad you made it! Yes, food is different here.

It's been a while since I was in Tuscaloosa, but the campus' student fitness center (REC? RAC?) was pretty incredible when I was there.

And remember as (American) Football Season starts: Nick Saban values the piano. 😁

It sounds like there is a story in this that I'd love to hear.🤥

Well.... First impressions:

Mostly I'm hanging out with International students, and those from out of state. The people I've met so far have been very nice.

The dark side of it is there's A LOT of homophobia, sexism and racism, which, coming from Europe, is alien to me in 2019, and coming from planet earth, is morally wrong.

I'll see how it is when classes start before I make more judgements. The faculty are all fairly sensible and progressive.

I spent six months in Tuscaloosa working at the university about ten years ago. I wouldn't say I saw a lot of that in six months, let alone two days. It's difficult to believe things have regressed so dramatically in ten years.

btw, political topics like this are generally verboten on PW. But, I hope your impressions improve.

Whoa!
That’s a lot of bad impressions in a short amount of time.
No examples?

Hope you experience some positives, and turn those impressions around.

????????
Where did you go and what examples of racism, sexism did you see? That’s a pretty strong denouncement of the whole state and the whole country, wouldn’t you say? Good thing you’re coming from planet Earth. If you were from Planet Saturn, you’d find it really intolerable. grin
For a reality check- leave the campus and hang out with locals not foreign students.

These foreign students are more racist, homophobic and sexist then Alabama locals?

Just asking for a friend.

Morbid curiosity has me wondering about examples too, but in the larger scheme of things, conflicting opinions on these topics can destroy a place like this. PW is virtually the only online place I still frequent that hasn't yet been ruined by political vitriol. I sure hope it stays that way.

I'm not saying those topics aren't legit. But there are online venues where it's more appropriate to discuss them. I'd suggest reserving PianoWorld for discussion of piano stuff.
