Your piano technician saved you heartache and expense. Be sure to use that piano technician for your next inspection! Don’t be too bummed. There’s more pianos looking for good homes out there.

Given that the Steinway Model M is one of Steinway's poorer designs and that the Baldwin SF-10 is one of Baldwin's better designs, the choice, for me, is a no-brainer.

Make sure the Baldwin has a Renner action -- almost all of them did -- and go for it.

It will be too powerful for a small room but will open up in a larger space.

Find a technician who knows something about voicing.

Sorry to hear about the inspection results, but it's certainly good that you followed through with it! There are definitely things you can learn to look for yourself, like cracks. Anyway, your piano is out there. Keep us informed. smile
