It's Fun to Play the Piano ... Please Pass It On!
I start my University of Alabama journey this week, leaving Dundee Scotland at 3.30AM on Sunday, catching the BA 7.00AM Glasgow to Gatwick, the 11.05 Norwegian Air Gatwick to Orlando, and the 17.25 Silver Airways Orlando to Huntsville.
I've never heard of Silver Airways, what are they like? It's only a 2 hour flight.
At this stage I'm travelling with a suitcase, and all pianos are stored safely in the UK for now. In the next few months I'll start asking questions about moving instruments abroad.
I'm looking forward to starting my DMA and I can't wait to meet Owen and Sally in Georgia! That'll be fun!
I had to drop my wee dog (a smooth coat Jack Russell) off at the boarding kennels today, my sister is going to adopt him when she gets back from holiday. I'm still crying. Ugh. That was the hardest thing ever. He's too old to fly, 11 years old this year, and he doesn't cope well on a Scottish version of a hot day (which is 18 to 25 celsius), so I can't in all good conscience subject him to an international flight and then the Alabama heat.
So, today I'm feeling really torn, but I'll be OK once I'm on the plane. I'm actually doing a concert on Saturday night in Dundee....
Joe80! Welcome to the USA! Sounds like a wonderful opportunity. I’m sure your Jack Russell will forgive you for leaving him with your sister. He can give her the sad puppy eyes and get some extra tidbits. For Alabama - bring sunscreen and bug repellent. The summers there can be tough but the winters considerably more comfortable than Scotland. As you get settled maybe you can try some BBQ pork, fried chicken, fried green tomatoes, fried pickles, and sweet tea. Maybe biscuits with gravy (white sometimes called sawmill gravy). Good southern cooking for you to try. Again welcome.

- Just survive the month of August. September is a lot easier, in terms of the heat. - "Tea" means sweetened iced tea, unless you specify otherwise! - Try to use "y'all" conversationally at least once a day, and it will eventually feel less odd. - You will meet some of the friendliest, most generous people down here. Some will be total strangers.
Alabamans are fanatical about [American] football, and U of A is the epicenter. If you are not careful, you'll catch the fever (and it's not such a bad thing).
Dreamland BBQ is the best on the planet (IMO), the original location on 15th Avenue, not the franchise locations (although they aren't "bad").
I spent six months in Tuscaloosa before I moved to DC many years ago. I loved it there. People are nice and life is easy.

"Y'all" is not as difficult as the meanings of "Bless your heart!"
The ‘bless your heart’ video is SO TRUE and I can think of a couple of additional meanings that can’t be posted on a piano forum😊. I’m sure anyone who has lived in the south can as well .....
Yeah, "Bless your heart" is more of a level-up thing from "y'all". There's a progression to the pedagogy here...we don't want to intimidate with the peculiarities of the vernacular, at least not at first!
I am not very close to you (about a 14 hour drive or so) but welcome to the USA! I will be with you, at least in spirit, and I look forward to hearing about your adventures here!
