I know for whatever reason this is a touchy subject for dealers (due to pressure from the parent company to maintain full price I guess), but what credible asking prices or sales have you all seen on late model Steinway D? By late model I mean lightly used less than 3-5 years old or brand new. The piano book lists no discount and has NY $176K and German $172K.

I have seen NY $171K (asking) and Hamburg $140K (asking) brand new. Also 4 years old NY $90K.

The prices for D's are going to be all over the map depending on condition. A D that has sat in someone's home and lightly played (yes there are those) as opposed to one that has been used in outside venues, moved every day and has dings all over the case from being pushed around in and out of doors in a big hall is another. A four year old D could be pristine or already showing signs of a lot of wear.

You will have to have a tech check out each potential candidate.

I don't really think that Steinways pressurise their dealers to maintain high prices on used instruments, it's just that the used instruments in good condition can fetch high prices.

D's are notoriously difficult to find in good condition, so a lightly used one built recently will fetch a good price for the seller.

oldMH,

Unfortunately, you are asking for reliable numbers that not only rely on the use and history, but are only available in incredibly small numbers. Hard to have a predictable market price if the supply is in the single or very low double digits.

My executors are hoping that some very high prices will be related here.

I’m hoping piano dealers and experts will correct me if my assumptions are wrong within about 2 nanoseconds. They usually do here on PW Forums. grin
High end recent model concert grands with light usage are quickly snatched up by universities, music schools, and smaller concert venues. They don’t stay on the market long for mere mortals. You have to be in the right place financially and physically and “just the right moment” to get one for home use. If we get tired of the long wait we can save larger heaps of money and buy a new one.
I’m just still waiting.
