My daughter liked simply piano on iOS when I had a DP.
Wondering if I would be able to add a midi Bluetooth adapter to the VPC1 I’ll be receiving soon for the iPad to connect to and still have it hooked up to the Mac on USB.

DPs often only support a single midi connection. So, the physical midi connectors are disabled when a BT midi connection is established. This happens in several Kawai and Yamaha models - not sure about the vpc. However, you can create a midi network or use one of your devices (Mac, iPad) as a midi router. In this case you can connect the mac/ipad to the vpc over usb and then the other device to the router over BT or usb or cabled/wireless network. Plenty of software supports this functionality, such as audiobus, midiflow, midimittr.

The networked approach seems iffy - Bluetooth directly to the VPC1 would be preferred. I would be using an adapter that fits into the “real” midi ports of the VPC1.
As far as I’ve been able to read the VPC1 supports both usb and “real” midi ports simultaneously but it would be great to have this confirmed.
James - would you happen to know if this will work ?
The key parts would be having the midi ports active while the VPC1 powered by the USB port - not using the power adapter.

The DIN and USB MIDI ports can be used together on several DPs and controllers. This also applies to the VPC1: "Both USB and MIDI can be used simultaneously, with routing assignment possible using the VPC Editor software." (http://www.kawaivpc.com/en/questions/). If you connect a BT MIDI adapter (like the Yamaha MD-BT01) to the DIN MIDI in/out ports you should therefore get MIDI data simultaneously over USB and BT. However, DPs that have internal BT MIDI often disable the USB/DIN MIDI ports when BT is being used. Anyway, depending on your use case, it might be simpler to use the computer as a router and forward the MIDI data to other devices from there.

Yes, this will work. The USB and MIDI ports can be used simultaneously - one of my colleagues uses this configuration with his VPC1 at home (Quiccosound mi.1 in the MIDI IN/OUT to pair with iPad, USB-MIDI to connect to Mac). I believe it should work like this out of the box, but if not, you can tweak the MIDI routing via the VPC Editor software. In addition, you can also configure the 5 preset memories for specific touch curves, velocity offsets, and MIDI routing, so would be able to toggle between iPad, Mac, or both with individual key presses.

Ah, that's a separate topic. You may find there is insufficient power from the USB bus to also power the BLE adaptor connected to the MIDI ports. Is there a reason you wish to avoid using the power adapter?

Kind regards,
James

Just want as few wires as possible is all - nothing against the PSU as such but would much rather have just the one USB chord to the laptop.
Will probably order the quicco adapter - looks perfect for what I have in mind.

Morten, I raised the power supply query with my colleague, who confirmed that his setup (Bluetooth MIDI + USB MIDI) works *without* the AC adaptor connected. I'm reluctant to offer any guarantees - especially without checking for myself - however it seem that your desired single-cable setup might be feasible after all.

Kind regards,
James
