I received an email from Steinway a couple of days ago advertising a class on buying used and rebuilt Steinways. I traveled by train well over an hour and they didn't mention a thing on how to buy used, the whole seminar all they talked about was how great they were and I heard one salesman tell a women how the appreciate in value. What BS.

Got to a Cadillac event and they’ll promote Cadillacs. I wouldn’t qualify this as screwing someone. You must have expected a sales pitch.

Yes, it just sounds like a sales pitch event, that's all.

But if it was supposed to be about used Steinways, that's out of order.

A used Steinway class probably wouldn't be much different, except that they would be pushing their own restorations.

More false advertising by Steinway sales representatives.

Next thing they will tell you is there is only one place a new "authentic" Steinway soundboard can be made; the factory. The next question should be; "why do the factories make two differing soundboards? Sound like there is at least two ways to make an authentic Steinway soundboard."

Followed up by; "How can you call the factory rebuilding facility the "Restoration Center" when you gut the old Steinways out and put them back together just like you do the new ones?" The old Steinways had different soundboards, hammers, shanks, agraffes and many other details from the current production.

I mean..... the advice they'd give you on buying a used Steinway is to buy some kind of quality assured used Steinway from one of their authorised dealers or showrooms, and for buying rebuilt, only buy one which has been rebuilt in the Steinway factory in Queens or Hamburg. If I was running Steinways that's exactly what I'd tell prospective customers as well. I'd also tell them that it's better to buy new pianos, and that the new pianos are objectively better than a second hand one or a rebuilt one.

Bechstein, Blüthner and Bösendorfer make a bit of noise about authentic restorations now as well, although I've never heard of a Bechwas.

I hope you complained to those who invited you since they would be in a better position to address your concern than random strangers on the internet, haha.

As far I know, Blüthner at least attempts authentic restorations, as opposed to putting a modern piano in an old case.

That's why I purchased used pianos only (in pristine condition of course!), and always tested and chosen by myself.

What I expected from what was supposed to be a reputable company was what the email said, a seminar on buying used or rebuilt Steinway's.

Sounds like you got treated to a time share pitch. Not what I would expect from a quality company.

Or the retirement seminars held at Ruth Chris Steakhouse. Free petite filet after you hear an hour long annuity sales pitch. All I can say is, I have my financial plan already set but hey, the steak is great.

Maybe we should just go to “piano training seminars” aka sales pitches if they serve lunch.

Sort of. It depends what you mean by new piano in an old case. Blüthner Leipzig restorations come back much closer in tone to the new ones than Blüthner London restorations and yet they might both be regarded as new pianos in old cases.

Really it's for another thread and is an interesting topic.

It's complex. Even a 20 year old piano can't be the same as when it left the factory or showroom. So your 'original' Steinway, Bluthner etc is always going to be a bit of a moving target.
