I`m going to accompany a choir for a church concert in December and one of the pieces is Faure’s Cantique de Jean Racine. I was not very pleased with the score I got from the conductor. Each of the four choir voices are noted on separate staffs, and as a result the 89 measures take 12 pages. And the notes for the accompanist are tiny and densely packed.

I found a much better score on a Russian website, but this one was noted in D-major whereas the choir is going to sing in the original D-flat major.

Do anyone know where I can get a decent edition suited for the accompanist. The best would be to have a version that can be downloaded, because I have limited time to learn the piece. The one of Sheet Music Plus is no good.

When faced with this issue I photocopy the work, cut out the piano part and tape it together on paper stock. Takes and hour and is worth it.

I always keep the original with me when performing - copyright issues you know.

Prout,
Thanks for the tip. In this case, however, I guess that I also need to scan the original and blow it up since the notes are so tiny.

Yes, I often have to do that as well.

Have you looked at this one on IMSLP?

Cantique de Jean Racine

It is in D-flat, and as Prout suggested, you could cut and paste the piano part which is in the same size text as the vocal parts.

Here a score from CPDL (choral public domain library):

This one is only 8 pages, and it says "organ," but it can also be played on a piano. The vocal parts fit on two staves instead of four.

Most editions on CPDL are editions that people make themselves on notation software, so you must compare this with the score the conductor gave you for errors or discrepancies!

The problem with this particular score is that it lacks phrasing, agogic marks, and most dynamics in the organ part, which is not laid out in a pianistic manner. The original french edition, available on IMSLP is a fine edition.

Cantique

Thanks for the suggestions. The two last editions are way better than the one I have. Fewer pages and still much more readable. No problem that they are actually written for the organ. Will work beautifully on the piano.

Glad you have a solution. Have fun. It is a lovely piece. My wife recorded it with Tafelmusik some years ago. The piano on the recording is a 1901 Bechstein model ‘B’, restored by Ibach to its orginal condition and sound. She also performed it in 5 concerts where the piano was a late 19th century Pleyel, restored as well to original, including the hammer reproductions. I got to play that instrument. What a different and wonderful sound. Perfect for Fauré. Much more gentle, serene, no edge.

The disc is called ‘Chants sacrés et profanes’ and includes Poulenc, Messiaen, Debussey, Saint-Saëns and Fauré.
