I used to practice on a Steinway model D. It wasn’t particularly well maintained, but I would grow accustomed to it’s idiosyncracies after a warm up. It was a great piano. Other than that, probably a Bösendorfer Imperial, or the old Bechstein concert grand I once played in London. Having said all that I would never part with my old Bechstein Model B.

I’m dying to try the Yamaha CFX.

In Vienna, despite wearing ragged jeans and smelly T shirt, I was permitted to 'try out' the beautiful Bösendorfer Imperial in its showroom in Bösendorferstraße (of course). I continued to try it out for the whole afternoon, until well after closing time. The elegant gentleman who let me loose on it eventually had to inform me that the showroom was meant to be closed half an hour ago, but he loved listening to me play.....

I was so lost in playing it that I didn't realize I had an audience who peered in (& presumably listened wink ) through the big glass window, behind which the Imperial was placed in prime position to be admired from outside.

Though I was clearly in no position to consider buying any piano, let alone the Imperial, the gentleman pressed into my hand the glossy brochure with the photos showing the Imperial photographed in front of the resplendent Schönbrunn Palace, before wishing me well on my travels. I've kept that lovely brochure to this day..... grin

I've played many more Bösendorfers since, including the new 280VC when it first arrived in the UK, but none quite came up to that Imperial's standard in terms of tonal allure and smooth liquid action. Though, of course, the circumstances of that encounter might have something to do with it. There was something that was so Viennese about the Imperial, that it felt so right to be playing it for the first time in Vienna, where so many of the greatest composers made their home.

I went on to play Wolfie's fortepiano in Salzburg and Edvard's Steinway B in Troldhaugen on that trip. Both were memorable in their own way - after all, it's not often you get to play on the same instrument that your long-dead composer idols once played on.

We may have played the same piano in Vienna..... I had four master piano classes at Bösendorfer. Each class included lessons on the beautiful Imperial at their Stadt Salon on Bösendorfer Str.

That Imperial is also my favorite. The people working at Bösendorfer are very friendly and so proud of where they work. Anyone can rent that piano for 20 Eur per hour. They must have really enjoyed your playing.

Steve

I once played Herbie Hancock's Fazioli before a show. That one wasn't bad.

I tuned it, and then went to another show where I tuned a CFIIIS, which I preferred. But the Fazioli was a nice piano.

I just feel I am beyond rating pianos. I just want make them play and sound as well as they can.

Best tone: Baldwin SD-10 (which is now sitting in my studio)

Best action: a partially rebuilt 1970s Steinway D (but it needed a new pinblock and the owner was unwilling to negotiate on price, so I passed on it)

Close runner-up in both categories: mid-2000s "art case" Steinway B (it looked as if the "artist" had smeared feces on it, but it was otherwise an excellent piano)

Honorable mentions: every other Baldwin grand I've ever played (I seem to consistently like them, probably due to extensive exposure to them in childhood)

Edit: by "best," I mean "personal favourite."

I got to play on a steinway D at steinway hall once, that was the first time I got to play on a steinway, and the only concert grand I have ever played on, I have now played on several other grands (but not concert grands) and the action of that D was better than all of them. I do not really remember the sound, the touch was what grabbed my attention. I guess I need to play on more concert grands.

I now have a signature.

For me, it was a Yamaha CFX (concert grand) at the Yamaha Piano Salon in NYC.
A stunning instrument... it kind of overpowered the room and the mics during the webcast though LOL

I’m happy to hear that!
Yeah, this Yamaha CFX was so glittering and ridiculously responsive.
I bet it would sound even better in a larger hall.

The Steinway D which is in Carol Nash Hall at Chetham's School of Music, Manchester, GB. I fell so in love with it that I could have stayed there all night. It was like a magical date.

And also a certain Shigeru Kawai ... <3
