Ed, it is a pleasure to hear you play unaccompanied. I have listened to a few other versions of this song in different jazz styles and different tempos on jazzstandards.com and like your rendition better than those because I find it not as complicated. You are playing it in the original key signature, D minor. The final chord you strike makes an interesting sudden ending.

Pianist685 - Fantômas se déchaîne ("Ma chère Hélène") - great work on this , the arrangment , the playing and the score. Ed mentioned those run ups in 3rds , was that your left hand or were you using both? Impressive either way.

Riddler - Always interesting arrrangements and great use of the left hand, something I need to work on when I play solo. Great tune, you had me rushing to the Real book once again.

Serge88 - The iReal app is not very expensive and there are loads of free backing tracks available on the iReal Forums and not just jazz , well worth getting.

Going through some of my old recordings, here's one of my tunes from a few years ago. It features Piano and bass ,I recorded the bass part first and luckily it all seemed to fit together. There is no statement of the tune here just the improvisation. This is a slightly different style to the way I have been approaching the standards.

Jazztpt, it is amazing how someone can have so many good ideas for such long improvisation. Is this another composition of yours? If so it would be interesting to know the original melody as well. Did you play the acoustic bass as well or who played it? The bass seems to be gone at 2:40, I could not hear it anymore over the last minute of the recording.

Hi, jazztpt! Very beautiful contemporary jazz -- reflective, floating, quite spiritual in feel. I, too, would like to hear the original theme upon which the improvisatory material was based, but I think that, in general, it's a great idea to state the theme last rather than first. Indeed, I would be more inclined to use that device with the Standards, because the people who listen to this type of music would be very likely to know the song itself. I've never heard of "New Lifetime", either as a standard song or as a jazz-based theme, and so I'll assume it's your own composition. Thanks for sharing it!

Pianist586 & Tim Adrianson - thanks for listening. Yes its a composition of mine or tune as I call them :-)
I recorded the bass first using a midi enabled keyboard, then played jazz over it, I end with solo piano which was intentional. The melody(tune) is excluded because I originally scored it as an instrumental, which I also recorded on the keyboard. The sounds/samples were not that great and neither was the arrangement but I was happy the way the jazz came out so removed the instrumental bits. I have been playing around with it this week so once I am happy with it I would be happy to share it here.

It's Scarlatti's K213 D minor sonata I've heard for the first time when my pianist friend Anna Fedorova recorded it few years ago. I decided I will one day learn it and so I did. I hope you'll like it :-)

I first thought you were studying the piano at the university or a conservatory but then saw in your profile that you are a software developer and amateur pianist like me. Mati -- There is no such thing as too much Scarlatti, as far as I'm concerned, given that it's played with accuracy and taste. You certainly provided those necessary components, in spades. Certainly looking forward to hearing further submissions from you in the future months.

TGoldman -- That cover of Billie's Bounce was really neat to listen to -- Charlie Parker meets Dave Brubeck, or more precisely, Joe Morello. As to its being Sesame Street or Charlie Brown Jazz -- actually, I give great credit to Vince Guaraldi, Joe Raposo, and probably Fred Rogers himself for providing light, optimistic Jazz as the background music for the respective TV shows. They filled a niche (and I think Jazz music is a niche, much like Classical music) with integrity and grace.
