Hi everyone,
Not too long ago I've gotten my CLP 685 and I'm still getting used to it. I've noticed that when I'm playing forte, some notes seem to have a "ring" when keeping the key pressed. This is mostly around the area of middle C and an octave and a half upwards. I've also played with multiple headphones (I mainly use a Beyerdynamic DT 860 that came with the piano) and it's the same. I haven't played a CFX yet but is that just a normal sound that a grand piano produces when playing loud and therefore it's just sampled that way or is something wrong with my ears or digital piano? I've also noticed one key in particular in the Bösendorfer sample that has a high pitch sound to it, so that I can always tell when I'm playing this note...

Thanks

If you turn off VRM (in the "Piano Room") does the sound go away?

If so, you can turn it back on and tweak the various resonance settings in there. Without hearing it, I'd guess specifically the aliquot resonance might be what you want to play around with,

I agree it's probably a resonance effect. Another possibility is string resonance from the undamped strings in the top octave.

Can you record that sound and post it here?

I tried fiddeling around with the settings but none of them seem to have an effect on this.

It's not that high up, the top octave sounds pretty normal but I can hear it when playing only middle C.

I played middle C five times and then the G an octave above five times where I think there is kind of a melodic ring coming after the note is initially played.

Hmm, this is weird. Sounds as though the damper is pressed but what’s odd is that it doesn’t sound like that in the beginning of the note. Could this be a VRM bug?

Isn't this the same?

I've recorded the three main piano sounds from my Kawai, each of them have all the resonance settings set high.
I don't think you can get rid of it. It's part of the sample. In your case it sounds particularly loud, though.

If it was, I'd expect turning VRM off would have made it go away, and the OP says he played with those settings.

f3r's theory is interesting.

BTW, to my ears, both of those samples sound completely fine, lol smile

Leon R, can you record other notes in the middle octave, so that we can hear the difference?

Here's some more tests of my Kawai, middle C only:
Voicing for the first 3 and the previous one have Mellow2 voicing and heavy touch, the last 2 are set to normal touch.
Resonance settings off.

Staccato resonance settings off.

Staccato high resonance settings.
https://soundcloud.com/user-350798041/skexsk5-staccato/s-37ok9

Normal voicing, resonance off

Bright2 voicing, resonance off

The ringing sound is present in all the recordings. You can barely hear a hint of it in the staccato/no resonance recording but it's still there.
I've recorded only middle C but the ringing sound is there on all the middle notes with resonance settings off.

Listening to it again, I don't think there's anything unusual. Last night I listened through my iPhone speakers laugh And there I was able to hear a resonance at the end of the G-s but with my headphones now it seems like this resonance is rather normal, like a soundboard resonance. The audio quality isn't great though. Anyway, it seems like the sound changes towards the end of the note and I'm wondering if that could be a result of looping?

With the other notes it's pretty much the same but after hearing your samples I'm more convinced that this really is intentional and just part of the sampling of a real grand. I was initially worried that there was a problem with my samples but I really think it's just what it's supposed to sound like, thank you very much for your recordings smile

I think that this is also due to the sampling, maybe the piano went funny or it ineed could be a result of the looping aswell.
