I was in Germany over the summer. Visited Marksburg Caste. They had a store that sold antique documents. I thought this would look cool over my piano. According to the seller, it is from the 1600's.

It's plainsong, in this case specifically a Gregorian chant on the motet "Tu es Petrus" (from the Biblical text "You are Peter, and upon this rock I build my church"). Plainsong dates back to the early Christian church in Roman times, and Gregorian chant from the 6th century AD. It was originally written without lines, and then with four lines to a staff, which is still most common. Five lines originated in the 13th century, and as this has five lines it must be from some time after then. How long after then? Hard to say. Gregorian chant has been written and more recently printed from ancient times right into the 21st century. It obviously looks hand written rather than printed, and bears stylistic features (such as the colouring and style of the first letters of each sentence) which make the 1600s a plausible possibility, but I'm very far from an expert so I honestly couldn't say with any certainty at all when it was from. A musical antiques specialist should be able to date it without too much trouble, if you showed it to them.

Wow! That's why I love the internet. I was trying to play it yesterday, but didn't have much luck making a musical sound. However, my wife and I are happy because of the religious connection.

I have two of these, purchased in Madrid in about '67. I had a local antiquarian bookshop examine them and he said mine are from the 1600's, on vellum. One of mine has illumination (decorative stuff). The music on mine is larger, and it doesn't appear as distinct as yours, which makes me think yours might be newer than mine. I think mine has music on both sides of the page but it is hard to be sure, as they're both framed.

I'll see if I can figure out how to post a photo.

Seems so wrong for them to disassemble these magnificent old works, but I do enjoy mine.

It came with a letter of authenticity....for whatever that's worth. I love the way it looks. It's framed now....once I hang it up, I'll try to figure out how to post a picture. I'm concerned about putting it in a room with lots of sunlight. If it's as old as they claimed, it probably won't handle sunlight too well. If it's fake, it will still fade in sunlight. Either way, I really like it! I watched a couple of YouTube videos of the song. I'll try to play it again, but it seems like something written for a pipe organ.

Use UV filtering acrylic instead of glass in the picture frame. That can block almost all of the UV light and prevent (or at least greatly reduce) fading.

You might find this interesting. I saw the exhibit this summer at the Art Museum in Halifax, Nova Scotia CA
I was not familiar with Antiphonal music before stumbling upon the exhibit. The book and vibrant illustrations
are beautiful.
