I knew how sick John was, and to this moment I am amazed at how hard and bravely he fought back. I could not begin to fight back that way.

Great courage. He was a man I very much admired as a human being. I would say any student would have been very lucky to have had him for a teacher.

It is a sad day to hear that such a valued contributor to PW is gone. I had no idea he was ill. I wondered why he hadn't been on PW lately. He will be truly missed.

I had suspected, but hoped for the best. He's with the Lord now, and while I'm saddened to have not ever met him, I feel I knew him through his generous giving of his knowledge on this forum. I do miss his words of wisdom dearly.

Prayers to his wife and family in this rough time.

I admired John immensely. He is missed. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

I've only just seen this - very sad news. I'd noticed he hadn't posted for quite a while but didn't know he was sick. I think he was the first poster to welcome me when I joined here 9 years ago. He was always generous with his advice and willing to share his knowledge and experience. My sincere sympathy to his family, friends and students.

Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear this. I always made it a point to read his comments when he commented in a thread, and I remember always thinking he must be such a fantastic teacher.

A great loss, for his family and friends of course, and for his students, but for us here at PW as well. very sad news.

I'm a little late posting here. Since I'm not a teacher I only occasionally migrate over here. I knew John for many years in the Olympia Music Teachers' Association. I can say, (pun intended) he was a real die hard (I say that with an appreciation of the "gallows humor" that John had about his cancer smile )Even in the final stages of his lung cancer he kept showing up to meetings (sometimes exhausted) and always wanted to contribute right up to the end. We had early breakfasts a few times, and one of the very memorable ones was when Del Fandrich, (former head of R&D for Baldwin Pianos and a regular on the tech forum) managed to get together.

I could always tell he just loved teaching piano.

Yes indeed he was. I just read the obituary and had no idea of his illness. My deepest sympathy to John's family and friends.
