Years ago I gave my son a challenge to write a theme for his future piano piece. He wrote a beautiful melody and I found it in my sheet music today. I'd love to develop it further, but it feels too familiar. Does anyone recognize it?

http://milana.com/mymusic/Brandon-theme.m4a

It's only 10 seconds. Reminds me of Chopin, but can't put my finger on it.

Thank you so much for your help!

Hm.... when you click it should download the tune. Try this:

http://milana.com/mymusic

The "Brandon-theme.m4a" file can be right-clicked and saved to play.

Let me know if this works. Thank you so much for trying!

Thank you Joel. Does it sound familiar though? I'd hate to build on this and learn that it's plagiarized LOL. Perhaps someone else will recognize it.

Neither link works for me at all. I just get a long page of code.

That's because the filetype is set as "plain text" so your web browser tries to render it as a webpage. Right-click on the Brandon-theme.m4a link and "Save link as" to download the file to your computer.

This sounds just a bit like the first few seconds of rach's elegie in E flat minor.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ElYS7lyJ3O4

I wouldn't sweat about it; people have been using pretty much the same harmonic moves in the past few centuries, everything is bound to sound somewhat similar to something else.
Anyway, this is a pretty cool theme, you can do a lot of nice things with it smile

I think it's 'original' but it reminds one of Chopin witch it is not.

The musical outline when reduced is mi - re - do which is a very common pattern. It may sound familiar but don't think you have plagiarized anything.

It is definitely original - and it does NOT remind me of Chopin.

What difference does it make is that original or not? I'm fairly sure that every single melody that is possible was used in the past by someone. The point is, to make a good composition with it, and to perform it nicely.

This is neat, but 150 years too late.

Thank you everyone! I am curious Eric399 - how does one decide if the music is 150 years too late, or simply a style brought back. I am a new composer, but the heart feels what it feels. smile I find it hard to "hold" back on the music that comes out of me.

I"m glad you asked this question Milana, since I was wondering the same thing myself. smile

I can see why you think it sounds like Chopin. Reminded me straight away of Nocturne Op 9 No 2.

Reminds me of a piece named Revolutionary Waltz. Don't remember who wrote it.

To me, it sounds like a snippet from a old movie soundtrack.
