Hello everyone,
I am new to the forum, thanks in advance to anyone that replies.

I was wondering if people would be able to share with me stories they have heard of amazing or special pianos. As one of the members has on their signature.

“There are only two important things which I took with me on my way to America, It´s been my wife Natalja and my precious Blüthner.” –
Sergei Rachmaninov

I was reading Oscar Peterson's biography recently and he had a Bosendorfer that he fell in love with. It was apparently similar to the one Liszt played and interestingly Peterson had been described as sharing some of Liszt' style by one of his teachers.

I would be interested to hear what people think as to the importance of the piano in the role of great music. I am sure some pianists might be a little insulted by this idea I am putting forward, but truly no insult is intended. I am just fascinated by the idea that some pianos might be special. With over 12,000 moving parts in them, their construction is not a science nor something that can be replicated exactly. Sometimes, I propose, a certain alchemy takes place and a special or magical piano is made. A piano with a soul!

Any stories or anecdotes would be really appreciated.

Best Gary

Try this one

In the left column about 1/4 of the way down there are more links.

The stories are special although the pianos may not be.

You might enjoy the book A Romance on Three Legs about Gould's quest to find his piano. I found it an enjoyable read.

Hmm, maybe I should document my eight-year, on-and-off search for my present piano. I did take notes...

Is that a long time to search?

The most special piano I ever played was a Pleyel that was owned by Chopin. It's in Hatchlands museum in England. I have to admit I got a bit wooosie and romantic playing it. The idea that Chopin himself both owned and played it was a bit overwhelming. It was part of a recording process for Sam Haywood (who recorded the first CD played on it). In all honesty modern pianos sound a lot better but who could resist falling in love with that piano?
