Thank you for your time, Rick. I believe you are a kind & gentle soul, and you've done a good job in a role that is probably against your nature, out of love for this community. I think you'll enjoy being an civilian again, and a treasured one.

+1

I agree, you've been as fair as can be, very moderate -- which is what a moderator should do.

BTW, how much time and effort does it take to be a moderator?

Thanks so much for the outpouring of support, best wishes, and kind words. And, thanks for the criticisms from a few as well. Thing is, now you don't have to worry about telling me what you REALLY think of me... smile

Seriously, folks, I appreciate all the comments and well wishes.

John, that is a good question, and I don't think there is a finite amount of time required. I enjoyed Piano World so much, that I spent way too much time here, and was basically a Piano World fanatic/addict. But I can think of a lot worse kinds of addictions/fanatics. smile

If you, or anyone else, is interested in the job, I'm sure Frank Baxter could use all the help he can get.

Here is an excerpt from the Moderator's forum, with some of the expectations and requirements for a moderator; I don't think Frank would mind if I posted this (at least I hope he don't mind smile )

I do not want to stifle free speech or make members feel they can't post for fear of being nailed by a moderator.

To this end, I would suggest moderators err on the side of the poster unless it is:

Blatantly offensive
Obviously bad information
Inflammatory or abusive
Could be construed as slander of a person or business.

The Moderator Will:
•Watch for Offensive Posts
•Watch for Inappropriate Pictures
•Warn Offenders
•Remove Inappropriate Pictures
•Ask the Poster of an Offensive Post to Remove It (or clean it up)
•Remove the Offensive Post Themselves if the Poster Refuses (and copy me on the details). I wold prefer you move the post to the "Restricted for Removed Posts" forum (last forum at the bottom)
•Unless the poster is an obvious knucklehead, please try to be tactful
•Uphold the "Three Strikes and You're Out" Rule (by keeping me informed of the details)
•Keep their PM boxes trimmed in case members are trying to PM them
•Try to Help Posters of Legitimate Questions (by pointing them to the answer if it already exists)
•Alert Me If They See a Particularly Helpful Post (so we can add it to one of the FAQ areas)
•Uphold a Code of Ethics

The Moderator Will NOT:
•Let His/Her Personal Feelings Cloud Their Judgement
•Ban Any Members (although they can suggest that I do)
•Abuse The Privileges of Being a Moderator
•Stifle Legitimate Debates in the Coffee Room (as opposed to blatant abuses)
•Override My Decisions
•Attempt to Steer any Guests/Members Toward a Particular Product, Dealer, Tuner, Etc. (unless it is to a public post/thread that answers their question)

Moderator Qualifications:
~ Moderators must be willing and able to put personal feelings aside.
~ They must use good judgement and treat all posters equally.
~ Should visit the forum(s)they are responsible for at least once a day when possible.

Moderator's Names

The moderator's forums name will show up in the forum(s) he/she is moderating.
Before we go live I will make another post to the boards explaining the role of the moderator, and that moderators are NOT to be harassed.

If any member feels they have a problem with a moderator, they are to bring it to me.

Moderator Rotation

We will likely keep the moderator count at 2-3 per moderated forum.
If you are not listed as an active moderator, it does not mean you haven't been chosen, it may just mean you aren't in the current rotation.
Moderators will be notified individually when the become active (or inactive).

If you were active, and then become deactivated it is not a reflection on you, it simply means I'm giving someone else a chance.

Discussions
Please use this Moderators Only forum to discuss things related to moderating, including asking for help or suggestions.

Dropping Out

If you feel for whatever reason you know longer wish to be a moderator, or would like to drop a specific forum but keep another, just let me know.
I would like everyone who is chosen to give it a fair chance, but nobody is locked in, this is strictly voluntary.

Questions?
If you have any questions, feel free to post them in the Moderators Only forums.
Posting here gives everyone a chance to ponder the question. (only registered moderators can access this forum).
Or, if you prefer to ask in private, email me... webmaster@pianoworld.com please make the subject line "Forums Moderator Question"

This Post Is Locked!
If you have questions, comments, or suggestions, please start a new thread.

Thank You

Once again I'd like to thank everyone who has volunteered to help moderate our forums.
Our goal is to keep the forums a fun, interesting, and even educational place to hang out.

Best,

- Frank B.

All the best,

Rick

Hi Rick,

I just want to say (at this late date) that you've done a fine job and I've appreciated your efforts. Are you sure you want to get out of the game? Just thought I'd ask to see if you'd reconsider. All the best to you.

Rick,

Yep, moderators certainly do engage in a thankless job, not hardly ever considered, but most definately required. So whatchagonna' do with all this newfound time off? Maybe you could write the first music ever for...two hands and three pianos? Nyuk nyuk!!

Wishing you all the best,
Andy

Rickster, Thanks for doing a great job! Your work is greatly appreciated.

Wow, Rick - my computer is down for a couple days and look what happens!

I'm one of those people who have been lurking regularly for a few years now, but have hardly ever posted. I remember your gracious reply when I did post, and I've appreciated your knowledge, respect, and fairness. Not to mention the YouTube videos I've enjoyed! Glad you'll still be around to share your wisdom.

I spend more time browsing around the Adult Beginners Forum than this one, so I've only just come across your news. A giant 'Thank You', Rick. A moderator's job is not an easy one, but it's vitally important and very much appreciated - it goes such a long way to making Piano World the wonderful, friendly community that I've found it to be. Congratulations on a job well done!

Rick, I'm sorry to see you giving up the job. I think you've been a great moderator, and I appreciate your response to personal posts as well. As for me, I moved seven months ago; it took time to get computers hooked up again, and I just refound Piano World this afternoon. I'm so glad to be back!

thumb thumb thumb

Just wanted to offer another "Well Done" for all your forum work, Rickster. I don't stop in here often, but when I have it was quite common to find your calming voice of reason and good humor at work. Thanks for all of your input over the years.

Jim

Withindale, in response to your question, I know that I have a big mouth (figuratively speaking smile ) and I've been told that I was too honest, though I did not think that was possible. I do know that some things are better left unsaid.

With that said, and in answer to your question, I was the one who said I was retiring as a moderator.

However, I will remain an active member, advocate, and avid supporter of Piano World. smile

All the best!

Rick
