Totally agree-- I don't care whether it is overplayed and abused... I drag it out periodically, which I think I will do today. Just like Clair de Lune for falling in love again.

Clementi Sonatinas Op 36 No 6

My very old piano teacher took me on at age 5 after I had a tantrum when I realised my older brother and sister would get lessons but not me (I was considered too young). Despite her misgivings about my age I took to piano like a duck to water and the next year won the Eisteddfod playing Clementi's Sonatina in C (No 1).

Her name was Belle, a fitting name for a music teacher. I was a bit of a ... let's say strong willed ... student, always racing ahead on to pieces far too advanced for my age. I delighted in Fur Elise (which Belle gave in to and taught me); I also loved all the other Clementi Sonatinas and desperately tried to teach myself.

Time passes. Life happens. I'm now 53 and have just recently returned to lessons. I've decided to go back and do some exams again.

I'd forgotten all about Clementi until my teacher suggested No 6 for my exam. She played it and there was this memory somewhere, of long ago....

So I went home, dragged out my old (original!) Clementi Sonatinas, and there in lead pencil still in Belle's writing. DO NOT PLAY THIS CATHRYN!!! PRACTICE YOUR SCALES! Underscore underscore underscore!!

Ah, dear Belle, she was such a great teacher. I'm pretty sure she'd be happy with how I played it today (I did my scales as well!). And I'm pretty sure I ignored her advice back then "do not play this" because I learned it in 3 days, as if I'd done it before ..... Today was fun! :-)

Cathryn,

Nice to have good memories of your musicteacher....... I had a organlessons from 1966-1975 from a organist with the same name, Johan. He was strongly focussed on baroque music. The lessons were in a big old church at a beautiful Schnitger-organ. He learned me Böhm, Buxtehude, Bach, Pachelbel etc. Of course also other composers.... Next to my piano I stil have a picture of him, sitting with a big smile at his organ at home.......when I play Buxtehude Suites at my piano, I think about him......he would say.....well done Johan.....

Memories.....mmmmm

Best regards,
Johan B

These days played and studied several Pianosonatas of Haydn, so nice 3hearts 3hearts, you have to try some.......sometimes more interesting than the Mozart Sonatas, perhaps because they have some rudimentary influences of baroque......Haydn is sometimes more between baroque and classicism.....

Haydn, Pianosonatas

Next to that I played some parts of Schumann's Waldszenen.....

Schumann. Waldszenen

Have a musical weekend..........
Best regards,
Johan B

12/12: I played Mozart's Fantasy in D minor K 397. Almost got it there... I am almost 45 and have trouble with memorizing, unlike when I was a kid... :-( I was proud of myself when I made it through the first page without looking at the score! :-)

It seems about the right level for me. I really suck at Bach... other than a few inventions and preludes, I never managed to learn a Fugue. Not sure why I have such an issue with Bach... other than Bach is hard!! LOL I did teach my student Prelude in C earlier this year. :-) (She's working on Für Elise now, by Beethoven.)

I may pull out CPE Bach's Wurtemburg Sonata. I could never really get it in my fingers at the university level.

My biggest hinderance, is nerves. My significant other is a professional pianist... currently working on La Campanella (Paganini/Liszt) and the Emperor Concerto (Beethoven). He is a traditional jazz pianist by trade, but plays classical quite well. When I play in front of him, I clam up a lot. It's getting better now that I have a grand piano and the only way I get to play it is when he is home... haha... cure maybe??

The "new" Baldwin L gets tuned on Friday. HURRAY!!

Well, this morning I played Bach's two-part inventions no.12(A-major), 13(a-minor) and 14(B-major). Then I moved to three-part intention (Sinfonia) no.3(D-major) and no.13(a-minor).
None of these pieces are easy to play, and I spent some time on difficult passages, particularly in the two-part A-major.

Next I played through Bach' s Fantasia and Fuga in a-minor (BWV903). This is a great composition, the last movement being a four-part double fugue. Technically this piece can be anything from "intermediate" to "extremely hard" depending on how it is performed. Making out the themes in the fugue can be challenging, and since there are four parts, it isn't easy to phrase the themes equally every time they appear.

After Bach I spent some time on Schubert's sonata Op.42. I'm working on the second movement which is a "theme with variation" set that I'm going to submit for a themed recital under "Pianist corner". Actually I focused most on just a few measures in the most difficult variation where there are long sequences with 32nd notes in both hands. I don't intend to learn the whole sonata. The Schubert sonatas are very beautiful, but most of them are too long and difficult to be within my range.

I rounded off my session playing though three of Mendelssohn's songs without words (Op.38/6, 19/1 and 30/2). Then I had to leave for work.

Some days ago Neciebugs (Denise, Thanks!! ) wrote about The Würtemburg Sonatas of Carl Phillip Emmanuel Bach.

Tonight I lurked around at Imslp.org in the oeuvre of this composer. Very interesting.....

Perhaps these keyboard Sonatas are interesting for other pianoworld-members.....

Keyboard Sonatas, C.P.E.Bach
