Originally from Vic, moved this year for uni placement. Will be going back to Melbourne to continue study in like March of next year. I shipped the VPC by Thomann for a fairly reasonable price, but be forewarned, you get shafted on import tax and customs.


You wouldn't be disappointed. I switch between these and my AKG's and they're both fantastic. The monitors are my first pair of 'real' speakers, as before my highest end equipment was a set of Logitech Z5500's. The sheer clarity is the most surprising capability for the Event's, and it really makes a good classical recording come alive, and as I dabble in other genres of music, the extra bass extension doesn't hurt. Only down side is that you can really hear when a recording has been botched or low bit rate material. Also note, the stands were ~$500 alone, hard to justify the price, but what we're stuck with in Aus. They were also totally worth it.

Nice set up for a small space! But is it normal to have the speakers pointing inwards like that?

Thanks for that, I love it. To answer your question, I believe so yes. Anyone else feel free to jump in if I'm completely off, but the speakers are to form an equilateral triangle with your primary listening position, in my case about a foot or so in front of the keys. What I find is that this, coupled with them being at head height, offers the best stereo separation and sound stage.

Those are studio monitors, which provide very clear and accurate sound for a single person. That's why you set them up close and pointed to a point (and why the stands are so expensive). As opposed to stereo speakers that are just meant to fill a room and swamp a lounge with sound on the other side. Mind you those are very powerful and high quality studio monitors so they'd do fine blasting movie music in a big lounge room as well.

You're right about expensive; probably five or so grand of equipment in that picture. Here's to being a poor student! As for other media, they do a fantastic job and has prompted me to redesign my speakers for other areas of my house to follow a similar design philosophy. It absolutely amazes me their ability to handle material with impeccable clarity at whatever SPL, and if you have a digital studio yourself I highly recommend investing in a pair.

Well it has to better than those silly portable hifis with speakers pointing outwards!

My messy piano area

I see someone is playing Bach's Prelude No. 1 from WTC Book 1. I love that piece!

I respect your opinion about that Prelude.
But in my opinion it's one of the worst and unimaginable pieces by Bach that I've come across.
Even the kiddies pieces and the ones for Anna Magdalena have more content in them than this Prelude.
It took me ages to memorize this one since it's so similar throughout...no breaks...no mile posts as memory aids.
Anyway, IMHO and good that he didn't write it all in vain.
I find it difficult to believe that he actually wrote this...must have been in the wee early morning hrs in that case.

Why did you bother to learn and memorize it then?

I found the opposite for memorization. There are definite harmonic patterns and cadences points that you can use to aid memory. Did you analyze the harmonies? It sets a sort of harmonic template that is carried out again in the next few preludes including the C-minor and D-flat major one. The pattern is so similar that its hard to believe that Bach did not write the C-major prelude.

There's some quite nice harmonic progressions and voice leading if you dig a little into the music.

I really like the piece actually, and there's not a lot of J S Bach that I do like. I find much of his work too mechanical, soulless.

I recently purchased this piano, and it's a wonderful example of the late 70's Yamaha C7 series. I happened upon it one day while on a whim, when I stopped into a local piano dealership only to find that I knew the manager due to a shared interest. My first glance gravitated towards this long gloss black piano, which I played and inspected, and before I knew it, I was plunking down a $1k deposit! After an appraisel and the thumbs up from a PTG technician, I decided I would purchase it and have some work immediately performed on it...the dealer agreed to replace the white keytops at their expense, and the gentleman who performed the appraisel would do the keytops, regulate the action, and file & voice the hammers. Their in house techs would clean the inside, work on a couple scratches on the top cover, and lastly, polish the entire piano. I even left strict orders for the cabinet guy to leave the "Made In Japan" sticker on the left leg, making sure not to obliterate it, LOL.

The pics in the link above were taken soon thereafter arriving at its destination, my parents residence in the southwest corner of North Carolina, which will be my new home come the end of the year. The room it currently resides is ok for now, but I plan on undertaking a number of changes in decor over time.

Since returning to NY this past week, I feel like I'm a million miles away from it :^/ and am looking forward to, with great anticipation, a return trip as soon as possible to once again sample its tremendous bass, and delightful tenor and treble sections. I can't wait!
