I have a D. H. Baldwin that has tight action centers on the shanks, so we are throwing tem away and getting some good ones. The cheap hammers are going in the trash too. The piano has suatain, but is ill-defined. Mushy. I will try a couple of types, but I am wonderingmif anyone has had good luck trying to bring the sound of this instrument up to within the range of mediocrity. I think I need a hard maple molding, and beyone that I may simply refer to Ray at Ronsen.

Dave,
Where are you getting the new butts from? I thought they were no longer available.

I like the stock Hamilton hammers. But Ronsen's on the light maple moulding is hard to beat. Be sure to order them at the proper width or they may be too heavy.

Oh I see. I mis-read and thought it was a Hamilton upright. Sorry, Thanks. Dumping the original hammers is a wise choice. I find most of the Samick grands need re-pinning of all the action centers because of mystery sluggishness.

What is the cost of WNG shanks compared to wood?

Granted, I've not had much experience other than installing them on my 60 year old Baldwin L, and their performance is excellent! I keep having the feeling that I've put racing tires on on a well built Honda, but if the price is similar... why not?

W,N&G shanks are priced similar to quality Japanese or European products.

You might want to give Ari Isaac a call to discuss your Baldwin. His hammers are excellent. www.isaacpiano.com I am going on my 3rd piano using his hammers.

I also will be replacing the whippens/shanks with CF WN&G parts, and using his hammers for my 1928 Steinway AR.

Are you an accomplished classical pianist? Looking for that warm complex tone.
